aoxa, I don't mean to detract from your situation - and before I start writing, wanted to say how sorry I am for your loss.

Before I read your post, I was outside taking photos of what I came home to today. Thankfully my story hasn't turned out like yours - at least yet.

When I got home I went out to gather eggs - around noon today. As I was walking out there I see this:

You can see these are under the edge of the electric netting. I did kind-of pull some of the feathers toward the camera but when I first came out they were more concentrated right under the net.

So I'm thinking - great...something tried to reach under ...or a hawk...and I was imagining having to go hunting for a body. However when I went inside, they were all there but one of the BRs was in the nest. I waited for them both to get out of the nests and have been observing them but don't see anything obvious. If there weren't feathers on the ground I probably wouldn't have noticed anything - they are both behaving like normal. It looks possible that some tail feathers are missing from one of them.

Now, after having come in and read aoxa's post and the comments that folks have made about not seeing any blood or anything obvious, I'm thinking I should probably remove them from the roost tonight and see if I can get down to skin level and look for any signs of broken skin, etc. I guess it could be possible that she got too close to the netting - maybe sticking her head through?? And possibly got tangled up and thrashing around trying to get loose?

Not sure - anyone have any thoughts?
was your fence on when you found this? And did it have a good charge on it? Just thinking something could have reached through and swiped at the hen if the fence was off or ?

FF question:

You know I haven't been having any luck with FF. I did make another batch with less vinegar, but still no dice. So I am looking at the ingredients of the egg mash I use from the local mill:
Ground grain products (appears to be mostly corn, sometimes some oats)
plant protein products,
processed grain by products,
monocalicum phosphate and dicalcium phophate
salt
methionine hydroxy analog
choline chloried
maganous oxide
ferrous sulfate
zinc oxide
dried yeast fermentation soluble
zinc sulfate
selenium yeast
brewesrs dried yeast
vit a, d
manganese sulfate
copper sulfate
vit e
niacin
calcium, bioblavin, meadione sodium bisulfate (vit k)
pyridoxine hydrochloried,
vit b12
folic acid
thiamine monitrate
biiotin
ethylenediamine dihydroiode.

Geesh. They grind and mix it about 30 miles from me. It doesn't have rendered animal products...
Any thoughts?

None at all...could you describe the problem you are having and your set up with the feed...buckets, place, acv used, etc?
Can anyone help me determine a C.O.D?
I'm thinking injury, or attack - as this guy was found with his hackles flared and dead on the coop floor.
Pictures? It's a little disturbing.. My fiancée took the image, because I'm at work a little worked up thinking my head rooster Jagger is dead. However, it was definitely one of my meat crosses.

If that stray dog was back... Calm down.. breathe..

I would say dog but I also know they usually wreak more havoc than one bird...they usually get into a frenzy as the chickens run around in a panic. If it was a fox, it would have carried it away unless it was surprised and scared off by something.

Looks like his neck was broken, so if I had to guess he was wooled about by a canine...you know, the grab and shake? Not many feathers around about and the position of the body/neck seems to speak of a quick, violent death.

I don't think she would mind and you might ask her a little history on this hen as far as age of the hen and laying history. It may build some background for her malady.
I don't mind at all, help yourself. I've had the hen about 2 months, was told she is around 2years old, but I have decided I don't really believe anything I was told by the girl who sold me this flock...so we can say 2 years, but she very well may be older. Buff orp on FF for close to a month now, ACV in the water free range all day, decent forager. No one in the flock was laying until about 2-3 weeks ago, I have identified 2, but had not seen this one in the nest box until a day or two before dying. She stayed on the nest mostly all day and all night.. there were 2 eggs, but they looked like ones that belong to the other 2 hens I've identified as laying. I kicked her off the nest in the morning and I left for the day, when I got home from work around 8:30 pm, she was MIA for night time head count and I found her belly up under a bush outside. Did the necropsy late the following morning.

Not a single drop of blood according to Fiance. Neck was weird.
He could have been trampled by a goose or turkey...? It was under the roost. She took this guy outside because the others were pecking it.
And thank you for your condolences.
I found my hen in a very similar position with neck feathers flared out also, I don't necessarily think it is indicative of a struggle. My 2 cents.
