Ok we are underway for fermented feed here.. We only have two hens and one rooster so I have started small. Mixed layer pellets and whole grain scratch mix with some left over rabbit pellets ( sadly our beloved midnight passed away a few weeks ago) in water and added my unfiltered ACV. Note got it from our local health food shop. It's Bragg brand. You should have seen the look I got in the snotty health food shop when I said it was for my chickens.. Priceless....
I had zip idea on how much AVC to add. A few gluggs was all I could find in the FF thread. So I put in about 100 Mls into about 8 liters of water ? Is that too much ???? I live in dawin Australia and its the Build Up Season so it's about 33 degrees Celsius in the day and about 23 c at night so I don't think fermenting will take long.
Ok my questions are.
Did I use to much AVC
I had to add more and mare water as the mixture absorbed a lot. is that right? as in keep it fully emerged in water.
So excited, the chicken queen ( number two daughter ) is worried I am going to poison her babies..

Your not suppose to use a metal container when using Braggs it will corrode the metal & ruin the feed. You need two five gallon plastic buckets. Then drill holes in one of the buckets using a 3/32nd drill bit. Drill holes all in the bucket bottom & all over the sides. Place the bucket with all the holes into the other five gallon bucket mixs your feed in the bucket with all the holes add water & stir. Keep adding water & stirring. The bucket below will catch the water that drains. This will let the feed fermint.Keep checking & adding water as needed. It will take several trips back & forth untill you get the formula right. Once, the gains have absorbed enough water the feed will start bubbling. Thats when you know its fermenting. You will have to keep an eye on the formula a few times a day. I did like B said I put a lid on my top bucket. The lid is not completely shut just on top. I'm on my first batch & making it was trial & error but I finally figured it out. I didn't mention adding the braggs you just dump some on the feed & say glugg & then add more saying glugg & your done.LOL. I also used warm water from my hose its hot here so the water that first comes out of my hose is warm really kind of hot.

Nematodes:

Found one study that said beneficial nematodes could not survive in poultry feces, so I'm doubting yours were the beneficial kind. I've also found studies that state the deep litter system, a true composting one, will actually promote the beneficial nematodes that prey on fly, flea, lice, mite, etc. larvae and will help prevent these from afflicting your flocks.

Lots of info out there....who to believe?
No, the vet said they had Trematodes. I have nematodes in my garden & Trematodes in my chickens. It says that Trematodes are hard to detect. I fed them all pumpkin, cayenne pepper, & DE hoping to rid them of the trematodes. They seem fine .I didn't want to worm them with poison.

A common thrush remedy here that works is to use the baby's own urine and wipe it's mouth out with it. Back in the days of cloth diapers you'd just use a wet diaper.

I know this sounds yucky but have read that urine cultured properly can produce a sublingual (absorbed into the bloodstream under the tongue)
probiotic that is very strong and bypasses the gut so is viable. So what they did 'in the day' makes sense. How did they ever know??

Oh thank u so much.. Thought I was so smart. Have transferred to a plastic container. Will have to go shopping tomorrow. It's 9 pm here.

Gluug gluug love it that's brilliant. As a scientist I shudder at non precise measurements but I have slapped myself and am going with the flow..

Thank u again..

I always wondered if anyone else out here on BYC felt as confused and dismayed over all the health information out there and were looking for something much simpler, less stressful, and less costly.
x 50 and then some, BK.

One lousy louse found on my roo took me down the most time-consuming, chemical-ridden, expensive, confusingand frustrating path for three weeks! Wood ash..(which is still in the outdoor woodstove from last year) would probably have solved everything and we would have been able to eat our first several dozens of eggs.

This thread has an OT reaching tender-heartedly down to many misguided newbies to set us on the right path from the get-go. This is to be a 'classic' thread and Beekissed deserves a truckload of ovations for turning a bad situation into something better than really good. Three cheers for BK!

Ok! So your going to bed & my roosters are crowing & my quail are whistling so I'm getting up.

Poor Toby! It almost looks like they slipped his spurs off, and then chopped off the raw ends.Either that,or he injured the ends while they were still raw.

Thinking of a baby running around a while in a wet diaper until mom changes it as being properly cultured urine makes me giggle. But it's probably true because they often used a sort of plastic or rubber outer pants to keep the pee from getting everywhere.
