Bee, your pictures really make me miss WV. Though I've never lived there, I've spent many weekends exploring the beautiful mountains around the Ashland, Crumpler, Pineville area by way of ATV. We've not been able to get up there much the last three years because of the economy, but hope to this year. You are truly in God's country. Thanks for the pictures. We've dreamed of living in one of those beautiful, unspoiled areas.

yup. Short walk to the bottom of the hill to a stream

. Always flows. Lake overflow and springs everywhere!

Extended big freeze...like you've never known. Something that would freeze your lake for about 5 ft. down or even more.

I have sufficient rainwater tanks (gravity feed)to last 3mths ,plus4 dams that should last 12 mths, don't have to worry about snow thou.

So everyone can water their stock in the event of an extended big freeze or extreme and prolonged drought?
We've made it through the long drought thing o.k. a couple of times.... we weren't happy when they brought our well in at over 500 ft....cost a bunch more than we had planned. BUT in the long run we are grateful, when everyone else's shallow sand wells were dry, we were way down there in the aquaphor (I think) ...anyway had no problems at all. The extended big freeze is another story. Keeping the pump from not freezing and running it needs electricity. There are springs on our property, they need to be dug out and a cistern built, but I have seen them dry up for the most part in a drought, not sure what would happen in a big freeze. Yes, water is my biggest concern, other than my neighbor's ponds our choices are limited.

IMO, that area in which I lived is the prettiest part of the state...that whole stretch of counties down the eastern side of the state are stunning but the mountains and valleys in my area were just huge. Highest elevation in the state was just over the mountain from me. All the water taste like liquid diamonds and the air was like breathing silver.

I have a separate walled in room in my barn with stored water jugs and bottles. About 50 gallons. It it has a light bulb for extremely cold weather and six bales of hay piled up against the outside wall. We seldom get that cold of weather here but it can and does happen every few years. No prolonged droughts on my island in my life time. Five 55 gallon rain drums on the down spouts of the barn, greenhouse, and garage just in case. Yeah. I like to be prepared.

We do have some water stored and a bladder thing that fits in the bathtub, but the weight of that thing filled scares me. And there is a river not too awful far away (less than a mile), but further than I would like to be hauling from too often.
