Sad day :( I left everyone to free range our backyard like usual. It was cloudy and a little windy when we left. I kept thinking that I probably should have kept them penned today.

Returned from church and noticed a hawk sitting on the ground in the backyard. He appeared to be eating. He was. Apparently he got my youngest and littlest silkie mix. She or he was just 10 weeks old and probably didn't get to cover fast enough. Only the lower body remained when I shooed off the hawk. The other older girls & silkie roo were hiding in the nearby hydrangea bushes. A younger ones were all huddled in the coop. The coop was wide open and the gate door open. He could have taken my little one from the coop or maybe she just wasn't fast enough to get inside.

Either way I now have 13 chickens and one sad heart. I know the hawk was hungry and probably getting ready for the storm too, but it still makes me sad she's gone so soon.

She's the tiny black one on the right.

I am absolutely learning so much from this thread!! Started everyone on the FF yesterday and it is taking them a little while to warm up to it, but I am sure they will.

Bobbieschicks - I am so sorry for your loss! I had the same thing happen,I came home from church to find the hawk on one of my girls. That was my first loss :(

I was wanting to post a few pictures and see if anyone has any ideas as to what is happening to my girl's beak. It has been going on for about 2 months. I took her to the vet, who works on birds at our local zoo. She did not even know what is going on. I would love it if anyone has any ideas and what might be a remedy to get these wart looking things to go away!! Oh and no one else is showing any signs of this on their beaks. Thank you so much for any help!

I've never seen it any of my flocks but have seen similar things on the forum but rarely on both sides of the beak. To me it looks like fungal growths. Some may say it is viral, like warts. The beak looks like it needs a serious trim also.

If you want to treat this bird, I'd pick those growths off(they may bleed a bit, may not) and clean out the air passages as much as possible, then I'd put some Nustock on the nostrils. I'd give this bird some doses of Olive Leaf Extract as well. The FF may help with time also. I'd trim her beak also. Fungal growths or warts are pretty aggressive and sometimes the growths die in a matter of hours with no explanation and you never see them again.

Be kind of fun to experiment to see if you can make them go away with these methods. It sure is deforming her beak, isn't it?

Thank you. I'm sorry for your loss too. It's so easy to get attached to seeing them. I know God feeds everyone, I just don't like it when He uses my birds to do it.

I was afraid it was my Ancona AC as she just started laying a couple of months ago.

Sorry Bobby,

I ran to the hardware store to get some zip ties, i needed to reinforce a tarp, and when I pulled down my dirt road, I could see two hawks circling around my property. I never pulled into my driveway so fast. I left the dog out with them, but I fear that they are onto us.

That stinks... sorry!

How's the wind down by you, starting to pick up here..
