Here's a question for you Aoxa, since you're breeding. I have the three silkies, duke has the messed up toe, and I noticed the other two have no nails on the toe thats messed up on Duke. So I'm wondering if this is a genetic issue? I've been reading quite a bit, and most things say this is an incubation issue and not genetic. What do you think? I don't really want Silkie babies, but if one or two slip by, am I going to have a handful of messed up toes?

I can tell you that if Duke started out with that messed up toe, I wouldn't risk breeding him. It seems too risky. It does look painful. I did have one silkie born that way and re-homed him to a pet location. It wasn't folded over like that, but it was warped! He is enjoying his days free ranging and hanging out with his border Collie ;)

Extra toenails.. is that what you are talking about?

If they are otherwise a really good specimen, I would test breed.

The symptoms you talk about with your rooster is what my rooster is going through with one difference. My rooster of 8yrs has very labored breathing and it feels as if his neck bone is sticking out a bit. I would like to know step by step exactly how to bring him back to his playful self. Unfortunatly, he is a caged indoors at the moment with his female. In my area I am not allowed to have a rooster so I have learned to hide him so he cant be heared all the time. He does get to go outdoors daily at least till he starts roostering alot. But, not since his labored breathing have I allowed him to leave my arms or his cage. I will be following. I pray that my best friend only gets better and healthier soon, especially if I do what you are doing for your flock. Im sorry to hear about the 8 who you lost.

The labels came today! I'm ready to take a basket of Johnny Cakes to the feed store. They may shoot me down at first but I won't give up. So happy! Thank you everyone on this thread that encouraged me to try this. My first customer will be my daughter. I'm taking her a couple varieties for her egg laying hens to try tomorrow.

Wishing you the best of luck.

I brought the old Welsummer girl in the other day to look at her feet again. Just a small amount of loose dirt in that gland hole, soaked, washed, peroxide and some antibiotic cream. Not having a work space out by the coops I just brought her into the bathroom.... here she is with her feet soaking in the sink; I didn't have any epsom salts so have been using pure sea salt.
This is the cutest picture. So she just stays there in the sink and doesn't try to fly out?

Very nice. Easy packaging also. I hope it is a very successful business for you. After reading about all the people that don't have access to wood ash, I figure it would be an easy venture for someone. Thanks for showing us.
