Chapter 15: The Banishment
Charlotte of the Snowy Down, Fatima of the Gold-dust Feathers decided, is mean. She followed poor Fatima around, yanking out feathers and eating them, day after day and hour after hour. Fatima would give a little start when she felt the yank, and eventually Charlotte became so voracious Fatima started to bleed!
"Oh, no," she chirruped, "I'm dying!"
Rita of the Small Fire rolled her orange eyes. "No you're not. Feather picking won't kill you."
And Rita would know. As the smallest of the flock, she often got picked on. After a while of feather-yanking, the Great-handed Woman came outside and set up a big cage inside the coop. Fatima was shut inside, where she cried and desperately searched for a way out. All the other hens clustered around her, until Charlotte started picking on Rita. The Great-handed woman must have seen, because Rita was picked up and placed in the cage too.
Now, to be fair, it was a nice cage- a roost, a nice nest box, a feeder, waterer, and tin full of oyster shell- but it was inside! Fatima and Rita could not go out! They did not despair for long, though, for after a nice long sleep they awoke the next morning to sleet, slush, and snow! The run was filled with water, and, as Olympia of Midnight said, "you'd have to be a frog to want to go out there. And it's cold too!"
Will Fatima and Rita ever get out of the cage? What will happen to mean Charlotte? Fatima tries not to think too much, but questions pound her little mind like the heavy flakes of snow outside. What next? they pound. What now?
