The Saga of Fatima of the Gold-dust Feathers! UPDATED - Fatima died...

I just found this thread, another great chicken story to follow!

Chapter Ten
Fatima of the Gold-dust Feathers sensed that the days were getting longer. The whole flock did, really; egg production increased greatly, and the general attitude in the coop was cheerful. That didn't mean that the temperature was up any, however! Nights were as cold as ever, and snow still flurried during the day. However, there was always something to keep them happy.
"I laid a brown egg!" Ophelia the Chestnut One exclaimed one morning. Now this may seem like a mundane statement, but Ophelia is a Welsummer, and was expected to lay terra cotta eggs. However, to her great disappointment, her eggs were the brown of many breeds- a little creamy, a tad of pink, but mostly the brown of coffee doused with milk.
"How?" Rita inquired curiously. "Your eggs can't just CHANGE COLOR. Why, if I could do that my eggs would be bright purple."
"I don't know," Ophelia replied serenely. "It just happened. My eggs are dark now."*
"Ooooh," they all chorused. Surely a miracle was before them!
Rita tried very hard to lay a purple egg that day. It came out the usual brown. "Shoot," Fatima heard her mutter after a wet plop sounded from the nest box.
Fatima was just as happy with her nice little green eggs. They were her pride joy and she was cheered up considerably each time she laid them. She did wonder, though (though she knew it wasn't good for her). How could an egg just suddenly change color?
