The Scarlet Letter

I love to read. I despised Nathaniel Hawthorne. I believe he was the only author I read that put me to sleep everytime I picked up the book. Now I loved the Odyssey. Chose to read that on my own in 8th grade.
Our school district has 4 high schools in it. This year they are doing something new. Each school has chosen 1 book for the entire school to read including students as well as staff. They are also encouraging the parents to read them as well. They are having discussions at the school as well as having televised discussions with students and teachers. The students are able to go on the school website to give their input about their thoughts on the book as well. Should be interesting. Now to get my 15yo DS who does not enjoy reading at all to get started.

In HS I was required to read the Bronte sister's books. I loved them. A little Voltaire and Hesse. And one oddball called Hot Rod, I forget the author. I groaned at the last one, but it was actually a good book. Go figure. I don't recall reading any of the old classics from American authors from that time, I think we only did the English ones.

Now I might be looking into some of those American classics. Too many books, not enough time!!!

I'll bet it was Hot Rod by Barry Gifford. It's about the drag racing culture in CA, and a couple of other states from what I recall. It even talked about the tattoos these guys had and what they meant.
