The Silver Laced Wyandotte Thread

My son helped me select this chick from a bunch at our local hardware store and we chose it because it looked a little different from the others. It was in with the SLW chicks and we are pretty confident that's what it is, but are wondering if it is a cockerel. They are supposed to be pullets, but I know how that small percentage works and for some reason, I seem to be able to get the roos. Last year, I selected two and I think I've done it again, this year.

I have one little SLW this year, and she's a wonderful little bird. She always seems to be on a mission. She has quite a variety of flock mates: Dominiques, Rose comb brown Leghorns, Black sex links (EE x PBR), and Pioneers (i may hold back one pullet who looks a bit like a BO)

I'm sorry to ask ppl to repeat info on sexing SLWs but I really would like to know what I should be looking for with 4-5 week old chicks.

Mine are almost 8 weeks old.

Hi! Care to share any info about Silver Laced Wyandotte - We have (1,) she is quiet & stand off-ish to me & interacts well with the other 5 hens (all are 2 months old & are different breeds) ... will she ever have a bigger personality as she matures? I would appreciate any insight you have about this beautiful bird~ (Love your pictures of your silvers)~

Thanks, I do love my Wyandotte . As you say they can be a little standoffish . I start when they are young, just sit in the garden with them, put some feed on the ground by my feet and let them feed . I put some treats in my pocket and when they are close by encourage them to eat from my hand. Birds don't like being touched from above ( predator thing ) but are usually happy to be stroked on the chest.

Well my boys got in a fight. Looked out and blood and feathers everywhere. I think I caught them pretty early...no permanent damage. Bathes and ointment were a must. I snapped this pic...my SLW roo was cracking me up.

He really loves the blow dryer. He might be rumpled but at least no longer bloody!
