It could be lacing. Mine started showing lacing once they started growing out of their fluff.

It is a good idea change up their diet especially this time of year when there isn't much on the ground for them to get at. I usually feed a lot of oats and some corn to the birds to get them in breeding shape as well as some oyster shell. Now and then I may give them some extra fruit,etc

So far I feed pretty much all of that except limited amounts of oats. I am doing research and going to try to create my own feed. Mine love when I throw them left over game bird feed. My pheasants are picky and only eat the taste grains leaving all the pellets and a few grains they dislike. I have heard people feeding just that to their birds but since I am feeding 60 birds now with breeding season coming I feel like it will eat a hole in my wallet. Does anyone have a mix they created?

So, am I imaging the start of lacing? Or is it just too early anyway? Knowing next to nothing about them, it wasn't until this thread that I learned that some SLWs might end up with no lacing! I hope that's not going to be the case with these babies.

Cute babies. Go to pics under my profile and there are pics of a 3 week old SLW cockerel named Sarge. You can see his lacing coming in well at 3 weeks. He is a Foley line bird, not hatchery quality. There are other pics of older Foley line SLW's. Give it another week or two for the lacing to show. Where did the birds come from, breeder or hatchery? In all honesty they will be, what they will be when they grow up, and nothing will change that.

Thank you I really couldn't get a decent photo, but I should try one from the top. It seems more noticable that way. Of course I'm hoping they have the lacing because that was one of the reasons I chose this breed! I got them from a local ranch who sells to just about everyone in this area. To my knowledge, he breeds them all himself, but for bio-security reasons, you can't tour his adult breeding flock area.

Yes, 60 birds is a lot to feed especially when they are large fowl. Just culled my remaining Barred Rocks. I hope to have some partridge wyandotte bantams hatched next month. Our weather is pretty mild compared to other parts of the country.
