The Silver Laced Wyandotte Thread

I'm not sure, as I've said I've only ever had one so that's all i can go on.. maybe someone else can chip in, it just looks like yours still has the baby down around its face and so still has all the little lines around it's face! Did you buy yours as show quality stock or pet quality?

I bought them for pets/eggs, they are my first slw's, I have nine!!!!

Ah I see well they sure look like SLW but I don't think they're prime breeding stock, although that takes nothing away from the birds and doesn't matter if you don't plan on showing them

I LOVE my crosses more than my purebred chickens

The SLW is the one farthest to the right. No tail feathers yet.

Hi! I'm new to keeping chickens and I'm excited! I have 2 Black sex link, 2 Buff Orpingtons, 1 Barred Rock, 1 EE, and 1 SLW. They are all 12 days old. I have always wanted a SLW but I'm thinking that its a rooster and they aren't allowed where I live. I am planning on only keeping 5 and was going to give 2 to my neighbor.

All of the above chicks seem to be female except the SLW. They have all feathered out quickly and tail feathers are present on all but the SLW. Granted, I don't know their genetics to judge by feathers to sex, but how quickly do SLW's feather out? Does the lack of feathering out point to rooster? Also, he doesn't like to be held like all the others and tends to scratch around often and more aggressively. Though the posture doesn't seem any more erect than the others.

I really want this chick to be a female, but I'm not finding much guidance on this particular breed online. Any suggestions/comments welcome!

New chickie mom here too, but my SLW isn't feathering as quickly as her sister chicks are (different breeds). By comparison her Barred Rock sister chick is almost doubly feathered.

Hi Kekstrom, thanks for your input! Glad to hear that maybe this breed isn't as quick to feather out and that I can possibly still cross my fingers that this is a female. I really want it to be a girl so that I can keep her. Ever since I've looked around for chickens, that breed caught my eye. Would be great to have her produce eggs! Thanks again!

Here I just took these pics for comparison. As of this morning not only is my BR more feathered, but she is larger than my SLW. I suspect it's likely a breed difference, but also could be their hatch dates are different.

Did your chicks come sexed? Or straight run?

Wyandottes are extremely hard to feather and comb sex. And your mixed flock will offer you no comparison to her. (Hopefully her.) She's a Wyandotte, they aren't, so don't compare her to them.

I have a GLW and two SLW and they had me guessing on their sex all the way through 14 weeks old!! I was sure one was a Rooster because the comb started getting pink REALLY early, while my other SLW had no color in the comb whatsoever! Anyway, happily all of my Wyandottes turned out to be girls!

I am so excited m Silver Laced Wyandotte "Dot" (my kids named her), is getting ready for eggs!! The wattles are turning red! It probably will be another month but I am just excited to see that she is maturing. All my other hens won't be laying for at least 3-4 months.

Can one one tell me what is going on with her breast feathers? Why are they missing?
