The Silver Laced Wyandotte Thread

Got some babies today!!! Although they're technically for my neighbor's daughter (I gave her chicken fever, heehee-- oops!), they didn't want to deal with a coop and all that, so I told them I'd take care of them for her...but secretly I wanted them just as much! One is actually mine (payment for taking care of them), and I'm just in love with them! Like sweet little baby skunk birds, lol!! Are they supposed to be so dang LOUD though? I don't think I've ever had baby chicks that were SOOOOO LOUD! Whoo!!
Anyways, here's some pics of them. Sorry they're crappy quality, my phone is horrible for pictures and I just wanted to snap a few to show off!

This is the smallest, who I've been calling Lexi:



This is Astrid, she's a pain in the butt-- kind of a bully:




And this is Freya, she's sweet and big and pretty

This one's just for fun. All the babies think my 4 week old Ameraucana, Rowena, is their mommy

The loudness is most likely because the temperature is not warm enough for them, the first week has to be 100 to 95 degrees. And that is the cutest thing I've seen, I have never seen a four week old chick playing the role of a mother like that. But despite the cuteness you really have to think about putting in a separate brooder box for them because a four week old chick and newly hatched chicks have different temperature requirements. That is most likely why they are under her, to keep warm. This is my solution to a differing age groups. It has to be a gradual process of introduction.

Lacey at 2 weeks old. Still the most mellow little lady. She is just always 'there'. Never making a stink or vying for attention. But she IS really good at snatching snacks away from the others.

Just started my first flock - 4 SLW and 2 buff orpingtons. Chicks are 5 days old and I took these pictures today. Two on top are rather small and dark, while the two on the bottom are larger, more grey, and have similar feather patterns. Excited to see how this turns out. Any guesses? Time will tell and I will update you all!

Today, when I went to the coop to let my girls out, my sweet Silver Laced Wyandotte, Cherry, passed away. There was nothing wrong with her last night or today when I watered them and fed them this morning. It was snowing so I left the girls in a little longer than I usually would. She was sitting in her nesting box, which is not normal for her and looked like she was sleeping. I am heartbroken. Cherry was 8 months old and was a prolific layer of beautiful brown eggs.

So sorry Pattycat... is hard when you lose a beloved pet... she was quite the beauty. Sorry for your loss.

What beautiful babies!!! We are newbies this year, been putting it off for too long, but I absolutely fell in love with the Silver Laced Ladies. They are just way too beautiful!! We went after some and they didn't come in - they had Gold Lace Wyandottes and I got 2 of them. I'm sure they will be pretty too, but the Silver ones just seem more special to me. We also got 2 Plymouth Barred Rocks and 2 Rhode Island Reds, as well as 6 (now 5) Buffs. We were told the Silvers would be in soon. We were only going to get 6 chicks at the most this year to start, but .... well, as you can see by the numbers, we exceeded that. Finally we got our Silvers. I got 4 and one of them was just different. She has ended up being so special. She cried and "peeped" a lot when we got her home and she just didn't seem to fit in with the others -- stood off to herself, so I picked her up to comfort her. She really seemed to like that and she would settle right down and fall asleep when I held and cuddled her. She would be ok for a while and then I would hear her above the crowd crying again, it was a different kind of cry, so pitiful. I would go see about her and talk to her and pet her. Now that she is a week old, she has been the only one that doesn't go crazy when I put my hand in to feed and water them. As a matter of fact, she comes up to my hand and will step into it and let me pick her up for some loving. The others are starting to get curious and are coming around more. I let them peck my fingers and pick some of them up too. My little silver girl actually seems to get jealous. She pushed a bigger Buff out of the way that was too close to my hand. She is so sweet and the others are starting to show their personalities more too as they grow. I can't wait to see what kind of ladies they turn out to be. I'm not good at taking pictures and posting, but if I did I would sure send pictures of my pretty little girls.
