The Silver Laced Wyandotte Thread

The top one is The silver laced Wyandotte the bottom one is definitely a barred rock and it is likely that It is a roo/ male. The Comb is too big for its age which is an indication that it is a roaster.
I hope it isn't a rooster. I don't want/need a rooster. LOL

Yes, you are right, your top chick is a SLW. However that bottom one, I would lean to being a Barred Rock... as in... 95% sure she is a BR. I love my BR, Ethel. She is smart, friendly, and outgoing. You could always call the hatchery you ordered from to inquire what happened to your order. In your other pics, you clearly have your Red Stars and EEs. But they either gave you 2 SLW and 1 BR, or 1 SLW, 1 BA, and 1 BR. Are you questioning whether you got 2 SLWs? Or is it obvious you have two of the SLW?

I was just questioning the one. If it is just a BR I might still call them since I had said they couldn't substitute breeds. I it turns out to be a rooster... I will differently call since I paid the extra for hens and don't want a rooster.

It looks like a cockerel from the photo. It is showing the single barring characteristic of males, and it's comb looks large. A better, more recent photo would help

[/quote The first one is definitely a roo and as you suspect the second is a Pullet. So you're instincts are correct, you have a pair.

Hello the thread! I have 5 SLW hens and 5 RIR hens. I was thinking I could get a roo of each. Since they all are in the same coop, would the RIR roos only breed with the RIR hens and the SLW too only breed with the SLW hens? I don't want mongrel chicks, that would not be healthy, right? Advice please! JA

A rooster does not care what breed a hen is. If it is a chicken, he will mate with it. You will need to house your two breeds separately if you want to keep your breeds pure. Mixing breeds does not make unhealthy chicks, but you will no longer be able to call them a Wyandotte or Rhode Island Red.
