I thought I might share the story of how we came to get Daisy and Abby. just know that I used to let the chickens do stupid things, so please, no judgement. (and sorry for all the typos...

soooo,
Once we had a chicken named Cher (she was my favriot chicken. she was a real cuddle bug!) (yes, she had a brother named Sonny, but he died...) and one day she decided to go broody. we let her stay broody for three weeks hoping she would snap out of it... but she didn't...of course. so because I don't have a rooster, I went to the feed store and got a fertalized egg. actually I got two. they were a beautiful light teal color. so I made Cher a little nest in clear rubbermaid tub and it had a little wire cover (because two times I walked into the kitchen and found a random poop on the floor which is NOT good! I also started once a day taking her outside for like a minute to poop and stretch and then it was right back the eggs! it was so cute, she learned the way from the back door into her tub in the kitchen.) Cher also had a blanket around the tub so she could have plenty of privacy! then, after awhile, on hatch day, I moved her into the guest bedroom for more privacy. after the egg had hatched, we let her stay inside for a little while, but then after a couple days we moved her into her own little separate area in the coop. it was a wooden building with some windows that we blocked off for her. it is where the chickens sleep in at night now and it has nesting boxes for them to lay their eggs in. then, after a pretty long while, (I'm not sure how long it had been excactly...) Cher and Abby (her chick) where free-ranging in the woods (I live on the woods.) and a bobcat ran up and snatched up Cher. we do NOT let them go into the woods anymore! i cant believe i ever let them do that! Abby just would not stop crying for her mom. it was the, "mommy where are you?" cry. it was so heartbreaking. the next day i ran to the feed store to get a friend for tiny Abby. so when we got Daisy (the friend from the feed store) she just sat in the corner in a heap and just shaking. but she definetly wasn't cold. (i forgot to say that when we moved Cher and Abby outside I gave them a heat-lamp. and now in the story Abby and Daisy were in a large dog kennel my mom brought over with a heat-lamp. Daisy was under the heat lamp.) so i looked it up and i found out that Daisy probably had cocodosis (comes from crouded spaces with lots of poop and feed on the ground. This completely describes the feed store situation!) So i segragated Daisy for awhile and the next day she seemed completely healthy and fine so i put her back with Abby. they instanlty became best friends. I'll skip the part about the horrors of introducing them into the flock. in the end we had to put Betty down... losing chickens is so hard and sad, but the guilt that comes with making the choice to lose a chicken is horrible. but Betty was being so mean and all of the chickens were missing feathers because of her. and they were learning to be like Betty and Betty had always been a bully in the first pace, but it was still really hard and sad.
Daisy and Abby are still really good friends. Abby does peck Daisy at night, but its to make Daisy shut up because she cries at night. not cries, but more like a soothing mumbling. whatever you want to call it, it gets on Abby's nerves! they used to cry (Abby and Daisy) when they only couldn't see eachother (one's on the perch and one isnt ussually) they dont that anymore though. but when Abby laid her first egg, Daisy couldn't bear being that far away from her, so just jumped in with her! Abby takes care of Daisy like a mother would to a chick. its really sweet.
