The Story of the Rasberry Hill House Chickens

Chapter 5-

I have decide to make an "article" on Miss Henny, since the chicks all got their cameos yesterday. :D

Miss Henny is a wonderful mother as chickens go. She is always on the lookout for enemies, whether they be crows, hawks, or humans. (JK, the humans aren't really enemies!) She teaches the chicks how to scratch for food, dust bathe, or preen.
Teaching the chicks how to preen. (Sorry, not a great pic!)

She shows her brood what's good to eat and shares it with them. Except peppers. She loves peppers and eats the whole piece! She shows them when to go outside. But sometimes, she wants to get outside when we're not there. She hops onto the "gate" of the run until we come and open it for the whole bunch.

Crazy chicken. She keeps them safe and warm under her feathers, event though she won't let humans touch them. I guess we'll soil her beauty. :p

Chick updates:
Bullseye took his first dust bath today! Mommy is a good teacher! :D The chicks have tried some baby Spiders. Hmm... they taste good at first, but it sort of leaves a sticky-ness on your tongue... Weird. Also, Lacy has been not so determined to escape human laps. She actually slept in UnderHisWings' hands !

Oh, and another thing happened today. The chicks found a place where they could get under the wire. Ooooh! Exciting! That was until they turned around and couldn't figure out how to get back in the run. Scared and excited peeps came from outside the run. However, the little humans soon set all to right when they picked up the wire and put the chicks under. (We sound like heroes now!

So that's day five at the Rasberry Hill "Coop"!

It was so sweet- yesterday, when I was sitting in the coop, Miss Henny growled at something ( I don't know what- maybe it was me

), and then Largo ran under my legs, as if I was Mama Hen! That was one of the most wonderful experiences I've ever had!

Chapter 6
My goodness! Many exciting things have happened to the chicks since I last posted. One morning, the chicks went outside and the ground was wet from something called Rain. That day, the chicks didn't stay outside much, since more Rain fell from the sky. For those of you who don't know (which is no one), Rain falls down from the sky like when the humans toss the chick's food, it falls from the sky. Only this is water, not food; it is very strange. On another day, the chicks all took a dust bath! Good job, little guys!

Dust-bathing... (Well, some of them are...)

....and sun-bathing. That's Pig pen, a.k.a Piggy taking a snooze.

The chicks now no longer fit under Miss Henny. They are far to big! How they grow! *sigh* :)P) It is now quite visible that little Lady Liberty is no longer lamenting when handled. On the contrary, Lacy longs for love. (Pardon my long alliteration :p) She actually will hop up on a human's leg. She does this mostly when they are holding another chick, which puts the humans in a great predicament. How is one supposed to hold a chick in one hand and pet two with the other?
Friendly and curious Lacy inspecting the black clicky box.

Oh, yes, and they have been given new tasty treats!
Watermelon- Pink juicy sweet stuff. It's very good, but the humans sadly eat most of the pink part before giving it to the chicks. I guess the must think that the chicks don't like the pink part, otherwise why would they eat it? Ah, humans don't know what chicks like very much, sadly.

Peas- Green balls of yumminess. Unfortunately, they are a bit difficult to eat. And the pods that the humans give the chicks don't taste good at all, sadly for the humans who are trying to get rid of the pods in an easy way.

Cherries- Amazing but hard to eat. The chicks will even try to eat the pits, but those are a little hard to break...
Sequins (attached to clothing), shoes, and buttons - They look great, but the chicks and Miss Henny have not yet discovered how you are supposed to eat them. It's sort of puzzling.
hu.gif
Maybe you might say the chicks also had their coop sort of "remodeled"- kinda. Well, at least, they got a perch in their coop. As of today, a few have used it. They're so grown up!

While the chicks were outside, something terrible happened. A big, noisy monster that eats grass came by. Miss Henny and Lacy ran into the coop, and the other seven chicks huddled under the covered area in the run. But, they couldn't run past the frightening creature to go where Mommy was, and neither could Mommy run past it to get to the chicks- for who knows what the creepy thing would do? Both the chicks and Miss Henny looked extremely scared when one of the little humans came by. At first she though the chicks were under the safe box- but they were not!
ep.gif
When she found them at last, she took the seven frightened chicks and frightened them even more by picking carrying them all the way across the run and into the coop. Hmph! Humans! But I guess they aren't too terrible since they brought the frightened chicks to their mommy. Maybe humans do have some sense in them....

Aw! :love They had so much fun stuff to do!

I never thought to give them peas. We've been getting a ton of peas from our garden, spread out over the past few months. Y'know, not enough for a recipe, but too much for a small snack. Now I have an idea of how to use some of them! :D Thank you!

(Love the pic!

Tell me how your chicks liked peas!)

Chapter 7
Yesterday something very bad happened. One of the humans opened the chick's door to the outside and put it to one side of the run. Somehow, this was knocked over onto Bullseye! Elise later came out and picked up the board and a chick ran out! She reported that he was ruffled, but that he seemed OK. Today, he still seems to be doing good, thank God! And we are never going to leave the chicken door inside the coop again!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Today though, the poor chicks were let out very late. The humans left early in the morning and didn't come home until three or so. Well, they were happy to be outside! Did you know that they are two days over two weeks old! How time flies! They have become experts at flying- sort of. It's so cute to see them half-fly, half-jump up and down the slope of the run. They try to fly up the foot-high "wall" but they aren't that good yet! I feel so sorry for them trying to get to mommy quickly, but not being rewarded for their efforts! They only way they are rewarded is by the humans picking them up and bringing them to her! For heavens sake, don't they know that being picked up is not their idea of fun!
Yikes!!!! I didn't realize it had been that long since I last posted. The chicks are WAY bigger than they were in the last pics.I'm only going to post when interesting things happen because things are quite busy around. You might want to know that Largo and Goldie's names have been changed to Cleo and Calliope respectively. We first wanted to name Goldie "Calliope" as she has quite good lungs(
roll.png
) , and then we decided to name Largo "Cleo" as both are names of the Muses. That made my sister who wanted to name our hens after Greek goddesses happy
tongue.png
. But it's been so busy around here that I haven't had time to post the crazy things that have been happening around here for the past three days! Well, I'll start at then, because after all the beginning is the very best place to start, isn't it? (Warning, this may be a little long, sorry. But I think you will find it interesting. :)
Chapter 8
It all began last Saturday when UnderHisWings went to check on in Miss Henny and the chicks. I was upstairs hanging out on BYC when she rushed up asking, "Where's the Nesporin?!" "What's wrong?!" I asked, going to the bathroom to look. "Calliope's neck is all bloody!" replied my twin, almost whimpering. My eyes grew large," What happened?" I asked. I remembered that the Nesporin had been lost for awhile and told UnderHisWings so. We looked for the Vaseline as my twin said, "I don't know, but it doesn't look very good." We found the jelly and applied it to Calliope's neck. Poor chickie- it didn't look very good.We guessed it might have been a wire or something that she could have cut herself on if she flew up to high. We had to go to a party quite soon after, and we decided to leave her with the others for then. We probably should have isolated her, but that would have been a noisy and difficult affair. Anyways, when we got back that night, all the chicks were huddled around Mama hen and everything looked fine.
But that morning I woke up to noisy squackings. I jumped out of bed, ran down stairs, grabbed a jacket and slipped on shoes while praying, "God, please let them be ok, I hope it's not a hawk or something! Oh! What could be wrong!" I'm glad God understands mixed up prayers like that. Anyway, when I got to the coop, I saw Calliope running away from Henrietta who was chasing after her. Papa was already out there. Picking Cali up, we tried to put her in a box that had a screen over the top. But she was going frantic trying to get back to the others. The short of it is that Miss Henny had been picking on her and some on Cleo (I wonder why she chose the twins to pick on?) and so we put Miss Henny in a shed, the front of which we covered with a board and chicken wire. The frantic squackings of Miss Henny only deepened the chicks' sorrow and distressed peepings. I sat with the eight wailing fluffballs and had to plug my ears to keep out their heart-wrenching cries. I am not ashamed to say that I broke down crying. Who could do anything else? I had to run out of the coop where they stood, peeping their hearts out, so that I would not cry mine out. Eventually I went back inside the house with the feeling of a stomach tied in a sailor's knot. I was frankly miserable. We also separated Cali by attaching more chicken wire to one wire "wall" of the run. In this way, she could still see the others and "talk" to them through her prison bars so to speak. That night we found that she had somehow gotten back in with the others and we left her there. She probably would have gotten back in again or wounded herself in an attempt to. So the extra pen was empty. But not for long...
Mama and I had just returned from going down into town today when the doorbell rang. It was a neighbor stating that she saw a chicken near the mailboxes and wondered if it was ours. We freaked out hoping Miss Henny hadn't flown coop. One of my sisters went to check out Miss Henny's "coop" while UnderHisWings and I flew down to the mailboxes. When we got there we saw that the chicken was not Miss Henny. In fact, it was a Barred Rock with big fat legs and a really long,droopy comb . We remembered that another neighbor of ours had a Barred Rock so after catching her (which was fairly easy, she seemed friendly enough) we walked down the road to them. The chicken hardly struggled at all; we concluded that she must be quite friendly. We got down to the neighbors house who checked to see if her chickens were all there. They were. "Who's is this chicken?????" we thought. We went down to our house and put her where Calliope had been. We gave her food and water and she went at both of those like crazy. I think she was just so calm because she didn't have any strength to struggle. Once she had regained some though, she was curious enough to try to peck at on of Curi's feathers. That was when we noticed that her big legs weren't just big legs. "Mystery" as we had christened her, had scaly leg mite. Poor Mystery. Well, UnderHisWings and my other sister went around to some other neighbors to ask if the Barred Rock was theirs while I stayed with the chickens. I'm trying to keep it short-ish (and not really succeeding
hmm.png
) so, basically, none of our neighbors owned her and we had moved her to the barn. Poor girl though, we also noticed that she wheezes.
sad.png
Looking back now, I see that if Miss Henny hadn't pecked at Calliope, we wouldn't have had to make Cali. her own pen. Then, if Cali hadn't flown over and stayed with the other chicks, we wouldn't have had an extra pen ready to hold Mystery. I don't know, but I sort of think that was a God thing. I don't know if we'll be able to keep her. We'll first have to look around some more to see if Mystery is anyone's chicken. Then, I'm not sure if Mama and Papa are up to keeping another hen especially when were probably going to give Henrietta back to our Aunt. But I don't know what else we'd do with her, because I don't know how many people want a chicken with scaly leg mite, and I don't know of any A.C.F. Rescue's around here! We just may have to start our own....
(I'll edit later to add pics)
OK, yeah, it is long. I don't blame you if you don't read it because it almost scares me.... So here's the short version:
Miss Henny has been pecking on Caliope (formerly Goldie) and some others. We put Henny in her own coop and separated Cali too, so the other chicks wouldn't peck at her wound. Later, Cali rejoined the others. Today, we found a Barred Rock wandering around by the mailboxes. So far, none of the neighbors have claimed her and "Mystery", as we call her, has been camping out in our barn-turned-coop. The poor girl has scaly leg mite and wheezes. :'(
