My name is Julie Thorpe. I started Brave Heart Farm as a chicken refuge for chickens that are sold as roasters at the local feed store. I did this as a proactive expression of my reasons for being a vegetarian. A limited diet that excludes meat is a good way to impact industrial farming, but I also feel the need to provide what I think is acceptable conditions for farm animals. I believe that all living things deserve to have a comfortable and happy life. I also believe that consumers will adapt to whatever is sold in markets. It has been proven again and again that farm animals are not the " be all end all" of the American diet, so why should these animals suffer to feed a nation with an obesity epidemic?
My chickens keep me in touch with what is important and remind me that a healthy diet is achieved at the local level, as close to home as possible. by creating a self-sustaining environment, I have been able to find a sound balance by being an active participant in a self-sustaining system. My chickens are a resource which provides me with nutrition and comfort because I take care of my flock with proper nutrition and care. there is so much more satisfaction in eating food when I know that I have worked for it.

What is "pig swig", and does the hen have any symptoms other than an orange comb?

What type of chickens do you have? Some of the meat breeds don't live very long, even with the best care. Cornish X ones are particularly bad about overeating and becoming extremely overweight, and even if they can be kept from overeating, generally die from heart issues once just past adulthood.

Hello, Julie, and welcome to BYC! :frow Glad you joined.
That is wonderful that you have started a farm to express your views that farm animals should have good lives. While I completely agree with that, I do eat meat. But I strongly believe that animals raised for meat production can and should have wonderful lives until they are processed and they should be humanely and respectfully killed. There is no reason not to have the best of both worlds.
