The taste of eggs improves when I feed__________(fill in the blank)!

Till I start getting the free range eggs, when the wife always put mustard in the egg salad for sandwiches, that turned the eggs a really deep yellow. Plus I just love the taste of mustard. But with the eggs we get now the yolks are so dark the mustard isn't needed for coloring. But I still do cuz of the taste. Now our eggs salad is really deep yellow.

Plus the taste is really rich to the palate. Big difference.

I've heard that if you out food coloring in their water the yolks will be that color. Not sure though. Bugs and fruit make the chickens happy and that will make the eggs taste better.

Yep.

In fact some feeds like Layena have Marigold extract in them to color the chicken's eggs a darker orange, so it only looks like the chickens have a really healthy diet.

I free range during the growing season. In the winter when the snow cover is deep, I give them wheat grass, alfalfa and other sprouts. You could try that. It's not too hard and there are a lot of threads on the forum about it.

You could also grow some dark leafy greens next to the run and toss some in for them.

Thanks! I'm gonna get busy! Today I bought 5 ears of corn for .88 ! shucked it and cut the ears in half and gave them the whole kit and kaboddle!! They enjoyed it!

Some people have built raised beds in the chicken runs and planted them with grass/greens/etc. Then cover it with a piece of chicken wire held up off the ground a couple of inches. That way the chickens can eat the greens without getting to the roots and destroying the plants.

I don't know what that would do to your water bill, but you wouldn't have to do the entire run. As a bonus, they will keep busy while they eat healthy.

This is the link to the wonderful BYC page that shows her set-up. It is pretty cool!
