We FINALLY got the coop done. Well, done enough to boot the teenagers out of the brooder condo. It's been so much fun watching them grow from tiny adorable little fuzz balls to awkward teenagers with attitude, but I'm oh-so-glad to have them out of our laundry room. The girls spent their first night outside, albeit with a heat lamp since the temperatures were forecast to get below 50 degrees last night. They're thrilled to have so much space and even a roost for them. They've gone from one large plastic tote brooder box, which was then expanded to two to give them even more space when they outgrew the original, to the chicken mansion. It was great fun watching them check out their new digs, dig around and dust bathe. They will be six weeks old on Wednesday. The run still needs to be completed, but they'll be shut up in the coop for a few days to figure out that it's home. A few finishing touches on the coop and the addition of their ramp is really all that is needed. Still working on a name for the coop. Up next will be to build a tractor so they can have some 'free-range' time. Sadly we have far too many predators in the area to let them truly free-range, as well as being too close to a busy road with tons of cherry-picking truck traffic. Oh, and to hope that they're all actually girls... I'm concerned that two of them might be boys.
