The "Too Many Chicks!" Thread

We started out with an order of 25 assorted chicks. That first year, I snagged a few from the feed store, hatched some, bought some full grown - we were immensely outnumbered.

This year, we ordered 100 cockerels for meat, a Cackle Hatchery surprise (around 50 chicks), and an order of 15 ducks. \

No we do not live on a farm. We live in a town with no animal regulations.

When you live on a farm and say you have too many chicks, it's cute.
When you live in a house, with neighbors all around you, in a town, and you have too many chicks....it's just a different story.

So all of us with just "too many chicks" that are constantly feeding our chick-a-ddictions and will just have to find a way to make it work (anyone else hoarding large boxes just in case?), let's way in on past and present experiences!

Oh...and I'm going to set probably around 2 dozen of my own eggs for the Easter Hatch-a-long. Even though I probably shouldn't. LOL

Haha! Now I feel so much better about having 26 chicks and 6 ducks in our spare room right now so next time my husband makes a comment about the smell I can just tell him...."Some people have many more"

I started out with only 15 this year, then the local feed store had cute layer chicks so I had to get some of them! Then I saw adorable banties i just had to have, then I decided I wanted more banties! Long story short, I now hav 40 chickens 25 of them being baby chicks in 3 different brooders. my friends call me the chicken hoarder

I wonder if this is part of the reason municipalities are fighting against folks wanting chickens in their village, town, city yards?

Oh I'm sure it is. Because it is just so devastating to my drunk, coke-addict neighbors who allow their FIFTY mutts to run free 24/7 if I raise meat chickens.

*Eye roll*.
Someone is bitter about my chicken habit apparently.



Anyways, I'm in over my head with chicks but we are talking an hour a day caring for them. They are all friendly already because I mess with them a lot, none are neglected, and I can't see how it hurts anyone. It's just humorous to me. I also get comments about how my FOUR kids are too many, my three dogs are too many...etc. Some other people just can't handle that many animals (or kids) so they don't think anyone can.

I have been afflicted with too many birds syndrome also. However, in the last couple of years I limit myself--it is no fun whe 30+ birds come running to you when you go in the run because they know you are the food Mom. So, I'm able to take care of fewer and hubby is happier.

We have 9 and I am afraid we are pushing it with our coop and chicken yard. And the fact that we really aren't supposed to have ANY. Eek! The good news is that the neighbors are a good distance and excited about future eggs. I would probably have way more if we had more land. Hubs is talking about "just one more", but who are we kidding?! You can't buy one chick!

BTW, we saw the cutest ducks today at our feed store. But what do people do with ducks?! Are they pets? Meat? For eggs?
