The Transparent Hen

Could you elaborate a little more on how you use it?
What bulbs do you use, secrets on humidity, etc.

And thanks DB for the instructions!!

The mercury thermometer in the middle is very accurite, I also add a digital thermometer/hygrometer to watch temp and humidity. My first one the two lights have never worked and I didn't replace them, you don't really need them. On the top inside the little white circle is the wheel to adjust your temps clockwise sets the temp higher and counter clockwise will set it lower. You just need to tweak it alittle at a time til you have it perfect. I hatch 100% chicks in mine all the time. There should be alittle metal pan to set under the wire rack to keep your humidity levels like a water well does. If there isn't one a small pie metal pie pan will work.

My second one the lights do work and you can get replacements plus you can get new wafers from GQF. The second one I have just has an old metal pie plate that I use for the humidity pan. dbcooper gave me the replacement numbers for the wafer and I ordered a set but have never had to use them yet. I can look for my info or maybe he has his he can send you.

If you look at the first picture I posted, there was a 3 spoke ring. Is that part of the incubator or just something the guy had with it. (He never used it. One of his sisters bought it at an auction lord know how long ago)

Looks alot like the ring that holds a lamp shade in shape

I don't think that ring is part of the incubator. From the looks of it maybe someone had an idea to use it as an egg turner like in the Turn-X incubator. I got my Transparent Hen several years back from a retired school teacher. It came in the original box with the instruction sheet. The light bulbs are just 7.5 watt nightlight bulbs. They do not provide the heat for the incubator. One would be on continuously for illumination and the second acts as a pilot light coming on and going off with the heating element. I'll have to find my hard copy of the GQF catalog to come up with the wafer #s. The online catalog doesn't give enough info.

Mine do not have a part like that with it, the second one I did buy someone tried to put some extra bells and whistles on it but they were just for looks so I took them off. I found the wafer numbers that you will need from GQF if you want to order spares. It takes a 3081 TR-4 and a 3083 TR-8. I've never had to replace either incubator with them yet.

I wipe mine down after each hatch with a damp cloth of weak bleach and dishliquid solution and let dry. Your going to love this bator. I paid alot for each of mine so your very lucky!!!

Thanks everyone for the help.

I have cleaned it up (I really should be working on cars, not playing with an incubator

) and it is heating up.

BUT, how does a wafer thermostat work? Does it expand? Contract?
Anyone seen a thread on the operation of the thermostat?

Wafers expand and contract I think! lol My 1583 is also wafer type, I like them. Someone with more knowledge than I on the operation of them will have to chime in exactly how they work.

All I know is I have great success with hatches and wafers.
