i know a few others still getting prepared but for the most part its been a hush hush situation. very few have stepped up to improve their egg layers. when i searched for ways to improve my flock i didnt find many answers here at back yard chickens. so my idea was to fill in the gap on this website, let the people know just a little bit of how things were done in the past and why! if anyone doesnt like my post then thats just fine, but dont try to discredit me or my companions for the work we are doing. thank u all for posting. i think i gave the site an informative peek into the past with the hopes we can better the future. you are either trap nesting or your not,if you are then give us something we can apply to our flock. dont give us expensive marketing,we have enough of that in the world already.give the people something they can use.

"i have done so much with so little for so long, until now,i'm qualified to do anything with nothing at all" and thats my 2 cents

LOL and of 8 birds, only 2 of mine are laying at all right now. And only 4 have ever laid an egg. This spring though I should be doing good! I have the 4 hens, 4 pullets plus the incubator is humming away.

i'm getting around 6 a day now planning on using lights for heat as it gets colder, the lights will run a few hours before sunrise and a few after sunset, i think this will boost production a little bit. I'm not fond of the lights though, but i'll give it to them for now if needed

Don't need lights for mine, Orpingtons lay all winter anyway. Well, they should! One is molting and another looks to have fowl pox, she stopped laying around 2 weeks ago.

according to ''the back yard flock'' book by mike strecker fowl pox treatment calls for vaccination

I have been lurking here a bit, interested in how the boxes are built, but not doing it for my self at this time...maybe in the spring, when I have more time.

I just wanted to say something about lights...you might want to consider using the lights only in the morning, and let the sunset be the normal signal for the birds to go to roost, because if the lights suddenly shut off and the birds are in total darkness, they might not be able to get up to the roosts. Or have the lights grow increasingly dimmer in the evening. Just a thought, worth exactly what you paid for it.

Good luck with your trapping!

i agree, having lights cut off suddenly at night isnt always a good thing, i've seen them spaz when it gets suddenly dark like that and they can hurt themselves.

i would use a timer in the morning myself...
