The Trap Nesting Thread

today i had a full house,as you can see from the photo several nest boxes were in use at one time.this is a luxury my birds didnt have before.each of my tractors had 3 milk crates and true enough they would all lay in one or two crates, but i can only imagine the chaos caused by several birds wanting to lay at the same time.this setup eliminates all of that.also in the pic are three different size boxes it seems after the first week or so even the little one at the top left is being used.[but door hits bird when trying to let them out of box] the one on side of that one is the 20 inch long box [milk crate had to be cut ....top half of crate was cut to allow door to open fully] its being used also the bottom row of boxes are almost finished only one door left to fix

I will eventually do this. Right now I'm in the ruminating stage, where I decide exactly how I'm going to go about it and what materials I will use. Most likely I'll end up using wood from pallets. I've about exhausted my scrap plywood collection.

you all are welcome,
i find it so informing and fun too. i dont remember how i found these old books but i'm sure glad i did.i picked up several ideas along the way and just had to make a thread.i dont post much but when i do i try to make a decent post that everyone can enjoy.so if any of you out there want to join in please do,let me see your boxes, and if there is any questions please ask away.

pricewise i spent money on the wood stain [cherry],hinges and the nails. everything else was recycled

galanie-----if you make a pallet box i'd love for you to post a pic....a door can be made something like this

56493_nests_001.jpg

bottom of a long crate cut in two ---i didnt like these though

updating on things spoken about earlier this is box #1 that i made 14"wide 14"tall 14"deep
the door would hit the bird when i would let them out

this is box#2 ---14"wide 14"tall and 20"long
i then put a crate in but the door would hit
so i ended up cutting the crate to let the door move freely

this is the final design i settled on
i used bigger material to build with so the boxes are a little bigger
3 tounge and groove boards for each side and i just left the extra inch or two so they are roughly 16"wide 16"tall and 24"long
at 24"inches i can incorperate the crate nest and have room for the door to move freely i'm cramp for space 24" is the longest i would go

oh yeah i got the stain idea from nonny's chicken tractor...
