The truth about chickens

Wrong! Dinosaurs became extinct because of the flood... Man sinned and God sent the flood to wipe out all of mankind except for Noah, who was chosen by God to buid a boat in which he took two of every animal. But, after the flood, the vegetation was much smaller and could no longer sustain the huge dinosaurs. So, slowly they died out and became extinct.

Not sure if that was tongue-in-cheek, or serious, but let's try and keep this thread on track. I'd hate for the thread to get locked because we went from talking about chicken behaviors to debating religion.

Dinosaurs were extinct a LONG time before the flood. Noah could not have taken them on the ark if he had wanted to, they didn't exist any longer. But, thank God chickens still existed, and they may be bird brained, but I will bet you they were close to the front of the line to get on the ark.

After all, even a "dumb" chicken knows a good opprotunity when she sees one !

This is so true! You have to be prepared at any time to drop everything else or reschedule things to take care of a wounded or sick chicken. and of course it will be the day when you are already late for work and had plans that evening. (last Wednesday for me!) not to mention calling veterinarians in front of all your coworkers while at the office (because that's when office hours are) and asking if they will do a fecal sample to test for worms!

I kind of enjoyed that actually...

plus- being prepared to kill predators and sick birds is a big one that I think is hard to prepare yourself for if you've never had to do anything like it. I STRONGLY RECOMMEND finding a local farm or friend with chickens where you can either help kill a bird or at least watch so that you can prepare yourself before you even get chickens.

But i definitely wouldn't trade any of this!! I agree with what's been said about killing with love- my girls have taught me so much more about life than I ever would have imagined when i first got them!!

To add to the point that you have to take care of your chickens in the winter when it's really really cold, if/when you get the flu or bronchitis or some other illness, you still have to drag yourself out to take care of the chickens unless there's someone else that will do it. When I had the flu a few years ago, I payed the next door teen to come take care of my chickens. And forget vacations unless you have someone reliable to take care of them.

When a mother hen decides she's tired of being a mother, she will drive her chicks away by pecking them hard and this is very sad to witness. It's not really a negative - it's nature - but still hard to see.

Your computer will go down when you have a chicken emergency/disaster!

My chickens faces got these terrible huge tumors, disfiguring their faces and distorting their eyes! Looked like it hurt. It looked like something from a horror movie!

I'd had chickens for five years and never seen this. New place in Hawaii. I thought maybe old chemicals/pesticides on the coffee farm had given them cancer or something
awful.

I'd been reading Backyardchickens for five years. Nothing like this. But computer was not going to be fixed soon. Way out in country, no one nearby with computer.
So started putting them down. Really sad. Couldn't do them all that day.

Next day I was out and could use someone's computer to look up BYC. IT WAS CHICKEN POX! Recoverable! I didn't see how these huge tumors would heal up and get off their eye lids or off their faces and where they breathed. But they did go away totally days later. What a scary thing. Newbies should be warned. These weren't little blotches like
human chicken pox.

Really? I DON'T want kids... for many reasons but... getting back to WHY you should have chickens:
1. Chickens don't talk back
2. CPS doesn't show up at your doorstep if one of your chickens irritates you and you cook it for dinner
