The unknown offender

Raccoons will dig to get into a place if they can't climb in. They just don't dig actual tunnels though which is what makes this puzzling.

Ah yes to the woodchuck/groundhog thing. They do dig tunnels in the strangest places though, and I agreed that they won't hurt the chickens or eggs, but they can dig holes that will give access to real predators.

Just when you think it's safe to go outside, you look up in a 30 foot mulberry tree and see all the branches moving around. You think what the heck kind of bird could be that large, so you run for your binoculars and focus in. What you see is big brown and furry but no wings. Well don't let the words " ground hog " fool you. Pigs can fly, at least this ground hog seemed to ba able to!

Hmm.. not sure yet, like I said I heard it on the ramp so it was most likely attempting to get into the barn... Would a woodchuck try to get in the barn? We are getting snow now so I will check in the morning for fresh tracks

You saw a ground hog 30 feet up in a tree? Maybe the ground hog and raccoon working together idea isn't so strange then.

Maines got Wolverine up north. Persistant, powerful, and diggers. Justa thought.

I am not aware of any Wolverine still in existence in Maine.

Although they once existed here they are currently considered not to exist in this state.

Could you provide a reference since I haven't been able to find one and am interested.

As I understand it they are prone to frequent colder areas in the northern portions of the globe. They are also known to travel several hundred miles.

I was trying to make a point about speculating what it was, 'cause until you know every living thing is suspect! You could fill the hole with concrete! I see this ground hog every year up in that tree trying to get all the tender new shoots
