The Welsummer Thread!!!!

I hope that last egg pips out a nice little pullet.
You and me both Rock Home Isle. Still no sign of an external pip. I was up at 5 to check it and plan to candle after breakfast.

On a bright note I got to see my little chipmunk this morning. What a little doll she is. There is a second chick with chipmunk markings that I'm starting to suspect may be a Welsummer/Speckled Sussex cross. I'd be really pleased with that cross breed if it is.

Have you thought about crossing your Welsummer with a Barred Rock and starting the process of creating a breeding line of Welbars?

I don't think that that is the cross that gives you a Welbar...

The Welbar is a sexlinked breed developed in the 40's by crossing a Welsummer rooster to a Barred Roock hen, then backcrossing to a Welsummer hen to get the true-breeding Welbar.

The birds pictured in my post are of a Golden Welbar pair.

If you start with a Silver Duckwing Welsummer, then you get a Silver Welbar. I don't think that a true breeding Silver Welbar exists any more. But I do believe that a few people are trying to remedy that situation.

Yes, aart, I have. I would have to approach it from the POV of a Welsummer rooster over a legbar hen as only two of my 5 Welsummer hens are laying fertile eggs.

I candled the egg a few minutes ago. Still no internal pip. I'm seeing outlines of little toes but no reaction to light.

I'm beginning to think this is a late quitter as there is something 'off' about the chick's position in the egg. Still we are giving it until tonight before we make a decision on it.

I see...many crosses with compounded breed monikers...many crosses called by pure breed names too...haha!

Thank you to those that answered my gender questions earlier. It's pretty clear that we have a cockerel now at four and a half weeks old. Does anyone need him for flock protection or breeding? We are not allowed to have roosters in our neighborhood.

My last Welsummer egg didn't make. Eggtopsy showed that the embryo died at about 16-18 days. Nothing obvious. It just died. But my full Welly chick and the two (thought there was one, just counted 2) that look to be Welly/Speckled Sussex mix are doing great. There are 4 BO/Welly mixes and one full BO.

I'd have liked a better hatch ratio but hey, any day you get live chicks is a good day!

Finally got the pics of two of the boys from the first hatch uploaded. This is Primo on the left and Trey on the right. Both are Welsummer/Buff O crosses. The third cockerel is colored the same. Primo seems to have inherited the beautiful Welsummer blue green tail feathers.

I was really surprised that none of them inherited the striking hackle and wing feathers but have variations of the Buff O orange/golds.
