The Welsummer Thread!!!!

I hatched some Welsummer eggs and have been watching how they develop. I tried sexing them by the markings as chicks, then was told that the roos would have black chest feathers starting at a few weeks old. Well all my roos do have black on the chest, except for this guy! Should I cull him for incorrect coloring?

Feedstorechick~ How old is he?? Looks to be about 6 weeks or so in this photo. I personally would not use him, but that is just my opinion, but hold out for more opinions.

Here's one of my Welsummer roos. I hatched mine from Okiehen's eggs--nice, large, dark eggs-Channing Grisham lines. I love my Wellies--the roos are nice and the hens come jump up in my lap when I go sit outside with them.
I have 2 roos and I guess I need to post pics of both & get your opinions as to which one is the best one. They honestly look so much alike sometimes i have to look close to tell them apart. Both are big birds, have black chests and beautiful color.
Eye candy, good layers, pretty dark eggs, nice personalities---everything I want in a chicken!

What do you think of this roo? sorry this is not a very good pic of him but all I have on my computer here at work--
edit to say, he's about 10 months in this photo.

He's ten weeks. I have hatched twelve total and only three pullets, so I have plenty of other roos to choose from!

Country Mom, the pic of THAT roo with alot of rust color in his chest feather would have been a big DQ. I would not use HIM for breeding but however it should have some mottled rust feathers in the black breast.

Here is the example of my bantam roo:

There is a correlation between the red-mottling in the breast of the male and the shafting effect on the female. I have sent a copy of your pic to my original breeder and asked him if he would ever keep a bird like this to improve the shafting for the females or just cull it. Certainly he is not show quality and there may be other factors in his background that would preclude you from wanting to breed him. The only reason I can think of to keep him would be to improve some severe lacking in the shafting of you females but I'll let you know what my breeder says.

Terri, I'm sorry but the pics just doesn't show enough detail. From what I can see, he looks pretty good. Leg color could be better, back could be a bit longer, but the tail carriage is good and overall he looks fine. I must tell ya, a lot of folks come on here asking for a critique of their birds and I always find it hard to do. Partly because of the pictures but partly because I try to live by the Ephesian 4 motto which in short says, "If you can't say something nice. Keep your mouth shut."
