The Welsummer Thread!!!!

the shafts if I remember correctly were yellowish white in color. My best hen has this. Sorry I do not show my birds because of the disease issues.

What Nate wants to do is to follow the Netherland/Holland traits which they call for dark shafts. It would be fine for me as long we still have the trademark colors. However the US judges may like the light shafts. Netherland does not want light shafts on their feathers.

That is one pretty bird! I love her feather color and confirmation!

However, I'm not a show'er either (for the same reason) so I don't know how my interpretation stands up in real life.

I just wanted to make sure that someone didn't switch there breeding programs to find that their birds had been "SQ" but were now only "SQ" if exported to Europe.

Royce, time to chime in here. Anyone else show their Welsummers?

I don't plan to show either, but I do sell a lot of chiicks to 4Hers that might want to. I can't imagine the wellie girls NOT having the light feather shafts- they'd just look red. It's that little detail in them that makes them immediately recognizable. I don't want to lose that.

Thank you Lester, I enjoyed her as well and one of the BEST I have. That is why I wanted some daughters out of her! She lays me an egg every day from end of Jan to June, which she took a small break and started righ back up three weeks ago and I am sure she will continue to lay until October. Not bad for a four year old! I am hoping her daughters will be just like her.

She is from 100% Calicowood parents directly from Harry Shaw himself (not Estes Hatchery). The breeder in FL was kind enough to ship her to me when she was at least six months old. She was ugly but when she turned one year old, she was awesome looking bird!

Wow, that is interesting. Here is the hen coloring from the APA SOP:

NECK: Hackle, golden brown or copper, the lower feathers with black striping and golden shaft.
BACK: Reddish brown, each feather stippled with black and having a distinct lighter shaft.

I've always thought of mine as not bright enough shafts. That is why I posted pics of the exceptionally bright little gal a week or two ago. Can you translate Holland's equivalent for us?

Len

Do you have pics of the Tan-ish shafts and then the lighter shafts?

I will be taking a trip that starts Friday Evening thru Monday. I will be traveling from Hudson, WI to Springfield, OH. Anyone kinda long that route!?!?

Nate

We are near Cottage Grove WI, which is east of Madison WI and just off I94 a couple miles if you are heading towards Milwaukee, WI! We'll be around most of the weekend starting tomorrow- except Sat. we'll be heading to Springfield Ill to drop off a foster dog so she can head to St. Louis MO.

Before you leave Springfield, IL, be sure to eat at D'Arcy's Pint....GREAT food and very very popular! Try the horseshoes. Anything on the menu is great too! I've tried most of them and loved them all.
