Hey Royce,

Are you getting close to having eggs or chicks ready for me? I'm thinking about my replacement roos for next year. I want to "upgrade" the roos in every pen each year and I'm counting on you for the Wellie pen.

This year's RIR roo got a wild hare and killed my up-and-coming RIR cockerel so now I'm looking for a nice dark mahogany, good type RIRs to breed a replacement for him too. Anyone know where to find nice, nearly SQ RIRs with hens that produce 250+ eggs/year.

My oldest Wellie girl started laying again about two days ago. All of them are frozen LOL! She must have laid during the night!

EweSheep, that's just wrong...brrr! I live in Florida and I never thought I'd see the day when the girls water would freeze, but it's done it for the last two nights. If I didn't read all the cold weather posts here on BYC, I'd be freaked out about it being 29 degrees in their coop!

There's been a hard freeze here all week, very rare for this part of the south, and my newly laying Welsummer hens like to stay under the carport and have made a little nest there, behind a tool box to lay their eggs. Here's a few pics I was able to get today.

The roos like to run around the farm and go in the woods.

I'll let them continue freeranging till Spring, or at least for a couple more months, and then they'll go into breeder pens and I'll begin selling chicks and eggs. These all came from Whitmore Farms.

Believe it or not, the coop IS warmer than outside. With all those body heat they put out, dang, I could just sit in there and relax a bit! I threw a whole bale of shavings and they had fun with it. Supposed to thaw out later this week.

I dont mind frozen eggs one bit, if I can not get out there soooo early in the morning and as long they ar enot eating their eggs, I'm happy with that LOL! I was hoping that this Wellie girl, Spring will hold off until Feb to start laying since she stopped early October. I guess she wanted to get her quota in LOL!

My Welsummer hens from last June are all laying very well now. I like the dark and speckled eggs.
