The Welsummer Thread!!!!

Kim, are you going to be growing everything out to see what you end up with before selling the culls, or might you have a couple of chicks available sometime in the near future??

If Kim doesn't have extras, I have Welsummer chicks available from hens which came from her's and bargain's stock with roos from a breeder in Southern Oregon. I'm not trying to steal any of Kim's sales because I'm pretty sure she doesn't have extras after losing most of her flock to a neighbor's dog.

Thanks Len, Kim actually suggested you to see if you might be interested in the Wellie hen (technically a pullet still I suppose) that I have...I just got a text from my friend, and the feed store by her is going to have some Wellies soon, so she reserved some with the other breeds she had on her list. I'll for sure let you know though if she ends up needing the wellie roo still! thanks!

I have a Welsummer and a Black Copper Marans. I haven't gotten an egg from Wendy Welsummer since the fall. She is going on 3 , though. I get an egg from Maizie Mae Marans almost every day, maybe a day and a half, but I got her last spring. I must say Maizie Mae has a MUCH better temperament. I can just walk up to her and pick her up. Wendy runs away, unless I have a treat, of course.

I still love her, though, and would definitely get another.

Iggiemom - Thanks for the reply.....and just so you know, I've lurked over at the RIR thread and some breeder rir pullets are on my list too. Maybe 3 wellies and 3 RIRs..??

Lenster - Thanks, that is just the kind of info I was hoping to get from some of you. Seems like a lot of Welsummers in the pacific nw area.

Boy, I really wish I had more room....there are just so many breeds I am wanting to get.

Hi there and welcome, my Wellies' are wonderful birds that free range beautifully. Yes, they are eating more feed now as are most of my breeds, however when Spring comes my feed bill drops drastically and by far the Wellies are my best foragers and are allowed to free range daily, year round. You can't beat the color on the yolks...I keep the Wellies eggs for my familys' use and sell the rest. I also have RIR, BR, Australorps, Ameraucanas', Marans & Wyandottes. All of my Welsummers' have come from private breeders and have pretty nice stock, IMHO. Will be establishing a breeding pen this spring with my best and live not too far from you, NE IN. Would be happy to help this spring, if you can't find anyone closer.

I think you are wise to try different breeds and figure out which works best for you in your situation. I have young children here, plus kids coming to play and needed to make sure I had flock roos that would leave kids alone. Have done in more than one naughty rooster (not a Welsummer) who considered my kids a threat! The Welsummers pretty much go their own way and I never worry about turning my back. My friendliest hens are the RIRs', Australorps and BRs', always at my feet looking for Sunflower seeds.

You have found a wonderful site at BYC, have lurked for a year now, many knowledgeable folks who are willing to share their expertise.....The search capability has benefitted me greatly and have been able to find answers to almost every question I have re Chickens and such. Hope this helps a little

Risa

Actually, I am interested in that hen from Kim's lines if she is forsale. Not that Bargain's birds are bad, they just aren't as well built as the hens from Kim and I want to sell the best birds that I can. I have already picked out my Wellie layers for next year and all but one are from the hens from Kim. I want to stay a small enough operation that I can always be hands on and do superior quality control. I also plan to outcross with new roos every year in attempt to maintain a good genetic variety in my birds. I will be getting a roo or two from Royce (TailFeathers) late summer/early fall to complete my Wellie breeding pen for next year. I probably won't produce any national show winning birds that way, but I believe it should make for healthier, more robust birds in the long run.

Oh, which feed store is she buying from? It might be my birds she is getting anyway.

Jeanine~

A person backed out on their order of Marans chicks and Wellies so I have couple available now. I am only going to keep 2 of the Wellie pullets that I have hatched out since the dog attack, so I have 2 that can be rehomed. I also have 12 in the bator for hatch tomorrow (we're chirping like crazy right now) and 2 days ago I set the last Wellie eggs that I have received from my remaining gal, she hasn't layed an egg now in almost a week, that bum's me out as I have one more order for a gentleman to fill.

LOL! I have tons of little cockerals available if anyone wants them.......free come and get 'em.

My eggs didn't show up yesterday either, but the NPIP cert came yesterday so the eggs should be here today for sure..........I can't stand waiting can you tell?
