The Welsummer Thread!!!!

Can I join if I don't have a yahoo account??? If not could you put in contact with one of the members selling a cockrel from good lines? I'd really appreciate it!

I'm so confused. I have a hatchery Welsummer. She's mighty purdy but I think she may have started laying last week and I didn't think it was her because of the color. Could the darkest egg in this basket be hers? The one on the top right "corner" of the basket? It's quite a tiny egg and I think there was one before it of the same color, and since they are so tiny I guess it could be one of her first attempts at a nice Wellie egg. It's just so light compared to others I've seen :(
It is too light of a Welsummer egg and it looks nothing like in the terra cotta egg. That is to be expected out of the hatchery Welsummer. Other than that, enjoy her as an egg layer!

NatureSpace, if you got a Wellie that lays close that color of an Orp egg, I would not use her for breeding. Just enjoy her as an egg layer!

Yes it is free!

I must admit Yahoo is not as active as the FB or BYC Welsummer threads...it is nearly end of the year and many breeders are done for the year in hatching out or got rid of the roosters. Best bet is to find breeders that have hatching eggs if their hens are laying or find one that would be able to ship if you can put a "reservation" on for a cockeral.

Sometimes you might have to contact the breeders directly to get the cockerals before they butcher or put them up for auctions.

Some pictures of my bantam silver duckwing weslummers. I posted these on the facebook page, but wanted to share them here too. The first pic, I think the hen has too much silver. The color is a little off on the other pics, the hen's chest is salmon colored

Can you experts tell me if you think this is a purebred or a mix. She just hatched and I thought she was going to be half Basque, but I was thinking she looked pure. Basques are barred, so she might be a bit light because she is mixed. Let me know what you think.

Fay, those are some nice looking birds. Love the coloring.

I am new to Welsummers but think they are really pretty and I love the eggs I've been getting, sooo much bigger than my banty eggs! I was given 3 hens and a rooster that are pure and 4 poults that could be pure or could be half Americana. (which is fine by me since that means they might be olive eggers and I would love to have some). I'm trying to learn more about correct form and coloring of the Welsummers (but can't afford a copy of the SOP right now) so hoping you folks can help me out. I do understand that that the bit of white coming in on the roo is a DQ and would love to have some stock that doesn't have this fault.

Here is a pick of a couple of the old hens and roo (I understand they are 4+ years old and of course right now they are molting, but I'm still getting about 4-5 eggs a week) You can see a bit of white at the base of his tail and on the other side there is nearly a pure white feather on his wing.

This is one of the possibly cross bred poults (4 months still not sure of sexes) I'm really wondering if you all think they are crossed or pure? There is some difference in color through the body between them and the old hens, but it could be the old ones are just sun bleached, I don't know until they finish molting. There is a big difference in the way the neck feathers are marked with black between the old and young. I'm presuming that the markings on the old hens is the more correct, but I"m not sure as I've seen some pics other places on this thread where some looked more like my young ones.... comments definitly appreciated!

thats not an ameraucana cross, I would say you have a pure pullet there, an ameraucauna cross would have darker leggs among other things
