The Welsummer Thread!!!!

Well I am going to my first show this Saturday 20 Oct.It is a small show put on by the "Fancy Fowl Club of North Georgia " about 2 counties away. I have 3 Welsummer roos that I hatched May 23 so my boys are 5 months old. I am only taking the 2 best and let the judge tell me of those 2 which is considered the best. I will post results Sunday and possibly some pics of them.
Do you always get anxious at these or is it just first show jitters

?
hope you did well today!! keep us posted!!

When I last hatched some Wellies, I was told to go by the V..and yes the eyeliner. I am seeing here though, that now it is more by the eyeliner? The eyeliner needs to go how far back. I had 7 eggs go into lock down a few days ago, Had 6 hatch. I was thinking I had all girls, and one boy..how lucky is that? Posting some pictures, but not real good ones of the eyes. I have some Lavender Orpingtons in there too. No telling on those for a while for sure.

you can see the one in the back that I am thinking boy by the V alone..no eyeliner to
speak of..all of the others have eyeliner

I did get a picture of one of the face. Pretty cute face, have to say. Girl?

Another group shot.
I see 5 girls and 1 boy in the shot on the bottom.

Well attended my first poultry show as a contestant. It was a good learning experience. I was glad it was a small show as well. The show was mainly full of Bantams, Old English and Seramas. I came in first and last in the Welsummer breed. I had the only two Wellies there. In the Large foul category, there were only about 26 birds. Of those only 6 were continental group and my best cockerel of the two I took won best continental as well. Sorry did not get pictures while still in cages

Here are some pictures of my best cockerel that I call Fin

and now pic of second best and judge said difference in two that was evident was size of con and some white showing in wing feathers of second one that I call Hook. The third cockerel that I have is not show has a white conton puff at base of tail feathers so I did not take him.

I got the eggs that produced these birds from "Inside Yolk" off the list from the WCNA site.

My wife and I think that all our boys look good. Tell me any other flows that you might see. They are only 5 months old and still filling out.

Congrats! I really wish there were shows around here, I'd love to take some of my birds and get the in person opinion of a judge.

As to your roos, the wattles are long for birds that are young. The first roo's comb is a little on the large size. I can't see real clear, but how many points does his comb have? I like the body shape of the second roo, he has a nice rounded breast. The first roo also looks like he carries his wings a little low. ( I only know this because the judge reviewing pics on the facebook site just pointed this issue out on another roo)

They look like they're going to be some big boys!

oops, thinking I have a roo! See very young pics in post #7571, pg758 of this thread. The chicks are now 2 weeks old and one is not looking like the others ;-)

this is the same chick that is in the last picture of the other post; Besides his comb being very pink and double the size of the other three chicks, his wing feathers the first week were growing so fast and big that for a couple of days I thought he was going to have angelwing like a duck gets because they were trying to turn out. That has stopped and the wings lay correctly now. However I did notice that they grew a lot bigger and faster than the other chicks, his wing tips almost touch under his tail!

Here's one of the sisters that I took today (the milky look in her eye is probably from the camera flash)

Not all lines of Wellies are accurately sexed by triangle and eyeliner.
Sure are cute!

Quote: The Judges and one of the fellow contestants ( who's bird won in the large fowl category ) liked the first ones comb because it was big. That was what they said made him more desirable over the other one. It has the distinct 5 points. I personally like the second one also because of the lower profile of the comb.
There bodies are about the same it is hard to see in the picture due to the alert posture he is in because of the noise I have to make to get him to look in the right direction for the picture.

Thanks for your input.

interesting that the judges liked the big comb - the SOP reads :

Single, medium in size, firm and upright. Free from any twists or folds, around the nostrils, have FIVE regular and distinct points, the back following closely, but not touching the line of the skull and neck.
