The Welsummer Thread!!!!

A laying pullet or hen only has one functioning ovary. If that ovary becomes damaged a female chicken will start to grow a larger comb and take on more male attributes. they may even start to crow, but they will never lay eggs.

Thank you for your reply. Learning something new every day - and today it is that hens have only one functioning ovary. She / it is very much a pet, and I don't expect too much from her at all ... yesterday she was busy practicing her half-crow again !! Struts around like a rooster does too. Gorgeous chook.

Cheers ...

Anniebee, I would imagine that freaks of nature happen in all species. Having said that, several years ago I had a true BW Ameraucana that had characteristics of both male and female. The coloration was sort of a blend between a BW male and female. The comb was much larger than a female's but not as large as a male's would be. It got a little bigger than a pullet but not as big as a cockerel. After two years of never laying an egg, I finally sold it but my guess is that may have been a hermaphrodite. Now that you bring it up, I wish I had just butchered it to see if it had any testes.

God Bless,

Thank you for your prompt reply. I do think my little Aussie bred Araucana - with tuft on head, no wattles, what looks like a pea comb now growing, two small tufts on either side of her face, and a splendid upright tail - very pretty little chook ... is most likely a hermaphrodite. Yesterday she (?) practiced her half crowing again.

I could never butcher any of my birds - I only have 4 of them, and they are as much pets as anything else. But I guess breeders have to do all manner of not so pleasant things to find out more about breeding, cross breeds, reasons for sudden death etc. I have read a few posts on BYC that have talked about internal investigations etc. post mortem.

No - she / he / it, is very definitely a pet and if there is no egg laying that's ok. We get 2 eggs a day from my Barnevelder and RIR. More than enough for two people, and it's a pleasure to give away a half dozen eggs here and there.

Thanks again,

Cheers .... .

Congratulations on the eggs. Where did you get the chicken cut-outs? Are they painted steel? I'm a metal sculptor, so these things always catch my attention!
I got them at the chicken show in Salem, Oregon this past April here's the link.^^^^^ The guy who made them is a member of BYC ("Chicken Rustler"). He does some awesome metal work.
I like it! Thanks!

I will have about 40 Welsummer chicks available on the 27th if anyone is interested pm me. I am NPIP certified. These are good quality birds.

400

This is an updated picture of the chick I was doubting if it was a Welsummer. It is looking more like one now, what do you think?

It does look like a welsummer or brown leghorn here, but going by the young chick pix you posted of her, there is now way she is a purebred Wellie. She may be a cross and lay darker eggs though. :)

Actually, as far as the tail angle is concerned, these hens look better than most I have seen here (cf. SOP), as they're generally showing too low a tail, more like the German type. I don't know about that cock bird, though; his tail angle appears a bit low (although it may be misleading as they don't always carry their tails in the "normal" position). His color also looks very good, even if it's hard to tell exactly as these pictures are not close-ups.
Someone brought up the subject of hatchery Welsummers. I thought I would post some pics of my hatchery Wellies. I can't for the life of me remember where I got them, but overall I've been pleased. Of course I wasn't looking for show birds, just a good utilty flock. The chicks are some that I've recently hatched from them.
