The Welsummer Thread!!!!

What do you mean by 'quality'?
Do you want SOP birds or hatchery stock?

I am looking for a couple of birds that are a good representation of the breed, lay a very nice egg (or breed to) but can have flaws that would exclude it from a breeding program as I only have hens and a blue Ameraucana rooster and do not intend on hatching chicks.

My Welsummer is one of my favorites. She's so calm and friendly. She'll come up to me and stay with me outside every time she gets. Welsummers are one of my favorite breeds now. Their eggs are so lovely. :) I enjoy seeing them when I drop a visit to the nesting box!

I don't have any welsummers but am debating buying some 1 year old hens from Whitmore Farms in Maryland. I currently have 3 golden comet (sexlink) hens. They are about 3 years old and we still get some eggs from them. Do you think the welsummers would be a good combination with these?

How many years do the welsummers lay before they slow way down?

Do they fly much? We have fencing that ranges from around 4 to 5 ft tall. It's wire fence so hard to grab onto at the top!

Do they lay at least some eggs in the winter? Are they a good winter hardy breed? thanks!

I have welsummers in a 4 foot fence that I have no problem with but they have all the food and water they can consume. Last winter, my welsummers layed more eggs than in the summer but I had lights on to help them.

Hello!!! I was wondering if you guys could give me some feedback. I have one Welsummer along with three Rhode Island Reds and two White Leghorns. I believe she is around 33 weeks old and is definitely older then my other girls. All of my girls have been laying for four weeks now and I have yet to receive an egg from my Welsummer. Is this odd or pretty much normal? Thank you!!!!!!

This is Hawk my awesome Welsummer =)

Hi guys! I was finally able to talk my husband into getting some chickens either this fall or early in the spring. My husband is starting to get chickenitis, and thinks he wants to hatch some eggs too

This is the guy who this early spring when we started talking about chickens he would roll his eyes at me and call me crazy.

I think we have settled on some Wellsummers and some Ameraucaunas. But trying to decide whom to get the chicks from is a difficult decision. The two I'm looking at is Sandhill Preservation and Muddy Feathers Farm. Has anyone gotten Wellies from either place, and if so, how were the quality? We're not looking particularly for show quality, but I don't want poorly patterned feathers either. We are also open to looking at other breeders as well if anyone has better suggestions! Thank you!

Thank you! They are within a 5 hour drive of us... And they have Barnevelders too! That is another breed my husband wanted as well. Maybe I can talk him into a day trip to pick up chicks rather than eggs.
