The Welsummer Thread!!!!

I've had some from Sandhill. They were very nice with very dark eggs. My last one died from heat in a particularly hot summer so just be careful of that.

Thanks for the heads up on that. It does get super hot here in the summer, but they have plenty of good places to cool off. I'm hoping these will be what I am looking for... good foragers with good coloring for blending in. Love the dark eggs, too. The two I have now both went broody last summer and were great moms. They are friendly, but loud. One hen makes a point to stand in the water bucket while drinking, regardless of the temperature outside, lol.

Good for summer, I put out shallow pans of ice water for wading in hot weather....
...... but you should probably put something in place to prevent that in winter.

This is Nonay my Wellie. She's only been laying for a couple weeks & she's started getting VERY vocal now that she's one of The Big Girls. Today the kids walked into the coop to do their chores & caught her in the nest about to lay. She puffed out all of her neck feathers & let out a loud, trilling, scream like a freaking velociraptor. It was a very Jurassic Park moment. Seriously, 6 years with chickens & I've never had one do that before.

I love the vocal nature of my Wellies. No soft egg song, no gentle cackle.......it's the voice of an assertive, opinionated chicken.
I can hear them lay from inside my house......and they are about an acre from it! Not a city chicken, these ones.

how true! LOL

Even a daughter of my Wellie (the dad was EE) is as vocal as her mommy. :) She goes on for over an hour, before laying, after laying, and while someone else is laying an egg!
