The Welsummer Thread!!!!

I have decided my Wellie chicks are the smartest!

First ones to attempt the ramp and they made it to the ground...........my BLRW's are still in the coop.............."chicken" chickens!

I got Welsummers for Estes 2 years ago and can't say enough good about the birds or the hatchery. Nice people to deal with and the egg color I'm getting is nothing short of incredible. I have ordered more for myself and several friends so I have 72 wellsummer chicks due to arrive on the 30th.

Hey all you Welsummer owners I have a question for you... are Welsummers relatively expensive? How much would you expect to pay to buy/sell a point of lay Welsummer pullet? In my area a POL pullet would go for around 20 bucks, could a Welsummer easily sell for 40?

Thanks for any answers, they are such gorgeous birds. I may be getting a couple, fingers crossed.

I sell pullet chicks for $7.50 apiece and can't keep up with demand (back ordered into May now). I've never seen a Welsummer POL pullet for sale. If you cross your fingers, toes and eyes you might get lucky.

Oh my :O Well I found 4 pullets for sale for 40 bucks each, and I am having a real hard time talking the fiance into it. So you definitely think its a fair price? And can you sex them at birth by their patterns? That is so cool.

Woo- that's kinda high- 40 bucks each! But then again- I don't think I'd ever sell a pullet unless I was really overburdened with roosters. I'm going to sell chicks for 5 or 6 bucks. We're in a poor county, so I'll see how that goes.

If they appear to conform to the APA SOP standard and you see samples of nice dark terracotta eggs then they are probably worth that. Right now I'd gladly pay that so I could start filling my back orders.

I guess that I should add, appearance of being in good health too.

No, I can not justify paying that much unless it was recently imported or bantams.

The going rate of non hatchery Welsummers are around 15 to 25 dollars for pullet in POL and cockerals much less.

Thanks for the help, 40 seemed really steep to me but my area never has many chickens for sale so its hard to tell. I still think 30 is the maximum I could pay without my other half sending me to the looney bin for paying that much for birds. :O I just love how they look like my EE pullets, the pattern is so nice and the roosters are gorgeous.
