The Welsummer Thread!!!!

Those really remind me of Speckled Sussex! I hatched out about 100 of them last year. As day-olds I could hardly tell them from the Welsummers but those remind me of Sussex. Did she have those too?

I thought that too- I've hatched both breeds, sussex more recently. Maybe that's what I was thinking of

The leg color is wrong though. My next guess would be partridge rocks- which would also be really cool to have!

Could be New Hampshires, production reds or red sexlinks. The color looks too light for a RIR but the lack of pattern and multicolor primary feathers do suggest something in that genetic realm.

What kind of pattern would I be looking for. The lady that hatched them said they might be RIR (and I am afraid I don't know the egg color) but it was the markings on their wings that led me to think that they were not RIR.

Here is a close up - I thought this was close to partridge?

edit: looking at the Breeder's site they sell Wyandottes, Barnvelders, Welsummers & Penedesenca. They used to sell a variety of Marans. But I don't know how many of what eggs were bought and if the breeders non-sale stock was included. I have one (completely different) that has feathered legs so I am guessing yes.

Well, here's a RIR (rooster I'm thinking) at just a couple of days shy of three weeks old. ????? Hmmm, I'm thinking my chick is not quite the same as yours there.......

That is partridge. The RIRs are partridge too, they just have a Columbian gene (well two if they are purebred) that "spreads the red". Play with the chicken color calculator and see how it works.

Below are some pictures I just took of pullets about the same age as yours. The first two are of a RIR, the second two are of a Welsummer (I'm not a professional photographer and I quickly took pics of them in the garage so they wouldn't get chilled). My RIRs don't have a very nice partridge pattern, but it doesn't matter as it will all fade to red in the next few weeks.

There are Partridge Penedesenca, the cockerels have a very faint chipmunk pattern. Barnevelders are Partridge too but the lacing gene and their dark color make the chicks look way different. Partridge, Colombian and Buff Wyandottes are all partridge carriers but Wyandottes have rose combs. So my guess is a Partridge Penedesenca or a cross breed.

Thank you so much for taking the time to educate me - I knew chickens were complicated but I didn't realize how steep my learning curve was going to be. I cannot wait to play with that calculator.

I had not realized how subtle the differences between chick breeds could be. I have been thinking I had 4 of the same kind and the differences were the sexes. But now that you have posted those pictures I think that what I have is 2 RIR and 2 Welsummers. And I have no clue what the sexes might be. I am getting a sinking feeling that I have a brooder full of roos.

But it is the experience that counts right?

Again, thank you to everyone for your patience.

We all start somewhere!

I don't know if she's close to you- but Bargain raises really nice Welsummers & also sells hatching eggs. If you're really wanting to add some to your flock- she's a great lady to get to know

No, I can not justify paying that much unless it was recently imported or bantams.

The going rate of non hatchery Welsummers are around 15 to 25 dollars for pullet in POL and cockerels much less.

Ewesheep, you have beautiful birds, I'm surprised they don't bring a higher price. I'm getting new roos from Tailfeathers this Fall but I have been contemplating getting eggs from you for roos for the 2012 hatch.

It depends on the market for them. Some days it would be wild and other days, it was deader than a doornail.

It is easier for me to sell LF than BF. Unless the BF has the Dutch lines.
