The Welsummer Thread!!!!

I put 10 eggs under my wellie a week ago monday. Last tuesday my 2 obnoxcias new hamshire hens started pestering wellie and she came out of the nest and then they attacked her. I ran them off and I tried to lead her back toward her nest. but she ran under neath the storage building. I went to town to drink some coffee. About 30 minutes later I went back home and she still wasnt back on the nest. I went back yo bed because I work at night. I got back up a couple of hours later and she was back on the nest. A couple a days later I was trying to spray water on the grass in her nest and she came off. Within 30 minutes she was back on it again. Yesterday about 5 P.M. she was wallering under one of my squash plants. She was trying to cool off and gather moisture. It was over 98 degrees out side and about 18% humidity. I tried to pour water in a a wallered out place close to the squash plant. She ran behind the storage building. So I poured another bucket of water in a depression about 3 ft in front of her and went back in the house. This may sound crazy too some folks but I think someone with alot of expieance with chickens will understand what I was trying to do. I went back in the house. About an hour later I went back outside and she was back on the nest. I will be suprised if she hatches the eggs but Im still going to wait and see what happens. Im still hoping she can be a succsess. My BO can raise chicks because she is the boss hen in my back yard. But wellie is at the bottom of the pecking order. My assesment of wellsummers setting is she is easily distracted. She picked a bad time to try to set. But she is still trying. And oh yes If you are going to keep wellsummers dont get new hampshires because they are agressive and anything in the pecking order beneath them they are kinda mean too. My BO is on top but she doesnt pick on wellie. I should barracade her nest but I wont becaus its supposed to get over 100%s today and if she wants to abandone the nest because the conditions are unbearable for her then I will allow her to do so.

Well it looked like I have been banned from the Yahoo's Welsummer thread and can not moderate it anymore. I wished I had some notice if I did something wrong.......which I do not think I did anything wrong.

Oh well, Yahoo members has the vote on removing moderators. Bummer! It has been fun!

I have no hard feelings toward any members that voted me out. I was not able to access to moderating status but able to read the posts which that is fine with me. I think they are doing a bit of "cleaning" across the moderating crew. Thank you Lyn for your kind comments!

Like most sitcoms, they come and go. So I knew one day my moderating status will be gone by the next day and it did today. It was no problem for me to go when they do vote me out. It has been a good experience to see all different kinds of people with all different walks of life with all different kinds of information, opinions and differences among the Yahoo members. Most of the Yahoo Welsummer folks are already on FB or in the WCNA website so it is no real big deal if I have one less job to do. Remember Yahoo members voted and I honor it. Time for someone else to take on the duties and I do wish them well. Yahoo has been a good website for someone who needs a quick answer. BYC has been too.

You guys have been good to me, particuarly Royce who has been the original "kick my butt" friend who told me to get the club going and get it running.

I have gotten a few dents from his boots from time to time and making sure I run it well and true and not going all over the place when my head gets away with me LOL!

Are you talking about the Yahoo Welsummer Group?

If so, I've seen nothing on there that even resembles tension in any of the recent posts.

Yes, the Yahoo Welsummer Group. I know there isn't any but anytime the upper management, they can yank your teeth so fast that you didn't have time to blink LOL! No big deal, its one less job to deal with. Sometimes behind closed doors, you just don't know what their real decisions would be.

At least I can stay focused on the WCNA, and BYC and FB WCNA, I can run it (Happy Chooks is the mod for BYC thread like this one) and just read the rest and post the rest of the Welsummer forums anywhere else in cyberspace. Glad I was able to do the job!

Oh Lordy, it was like pulling teeth to Yahoo and made some really nasty emails to the support Yahoo staff for blocking me out. Deborah turned my status into ownership to see if it pulled some weight. It did. But I was hot and nasty. it was the worst combination coming out from me to send something that nasty to them LOL! I signed in this morning, and bingo, it was clear as day and was able to get into the site.

Oh lordy, someone wants to make some Duckwings out of Leghorns.........NOT! They would be considered as Legbars as in the UK. Duckwings are common in UK England but NOT in Holland. The English breeders are having alot of problems with their Duckwings because of the genetic background, odd colors popping up, egg color is not correct or too light, yellow and white skin, some have nasty temperments but it is a long going thing with the English breeders. The Silver Duckwing is the only accepted color in England and they are in debate about the Gold Duckwings.

However there ARE some Silver and Gold Duckwing BANTAMS here in the US but they have a lot to go but neverthanless, pure as they said. I believe they are German lines.

One day, someone will import Duckwing Welsummers from the UK and I hope UK do a better job maintaining the Duckwings and keeping it intact rather than cross breeding it with something else like a Leghorn.

Neocalgluconate

I got a pint bottle from the pharmacy when I raised cockatiels and parrots. Given by mouth by dropperful to stop eggbinding and provide immediate calcium. They need immediate calcium to pass the egg. You might want to talk to a good avian vet that treats parrots about eggbinding since we don't have any vets for chickens.

I had a cockatiel that laid 10 eggs in a row then eggbound. She went into convulsions all over the floor flipping upside down and all around totally without control due to being eggbound from low calcium levels after laying so many eggs.

It was also advised from my OB/GYN during pregnancy to help prevent the leg cramping. So it should still be available as that was over 10 years ago.

On these chickens, I feed layer mix AND offer oyster shell calcium as they aren't free ranging and getting bugs. I have also 'heard' on BYC that chickens LOVE plain Yogurt.

With parrots, there was a RATIO of minerals to be given for proper shell formation. So it could be the diet was out of balance in the minerals as well.

I don't know about chickens, but that is how it was with parrots.

I would like to hear how eggbinding is commonly treated/prevented here with chickens?

Really sorry for your loss Pink, it broke my heart when my favorite maiden alpaca was reported dead this March with causes unknown. She now resides under a Cherry Tree. Her name was Cherries Jubilee, and they are eating/baking cherries.
