The Welsummer Thread!!!!

Recently I hatched out 2 pullets and 4 cockerels. I dont want to grow out all of the cockerels so need to choose 2 to keep. How, at 3 weeks of age, do you choose them? 2 have developed much earlier than the rest; should I keep those? Or is it just way too early to really know how they're gonna turn out?
Anyone in Ks, Mo need some cockerels? They are originally from Whitmore Farms, directly from Bethel Farms (Ruth).

at three weeks, if I wanted to get rid of one, I would keep any that have a deeper yellow leg coloring. I would also look and see if there are any obvious comb issues coming on. Honestly though, you really have to wait to see what they are going to look like if you want to pick the best. Fast developing doesn't always mean better. I would also look at personality, are some friendlier than the others?

Thanks! I'll go look at them and try to get a feel for personalities. I moved them outside, so there is less urgency to get rid of the excess cockerels, at least for now . It's good to finally have my bathroom back!!

morning was looking over the 2 cockerals we hatched at the start of this year and we noticed that 1 cockeral has 1 very small wattle and the other wattle is normal sized for his age when looking at the other cockeral. We will not be using the one with the different sized wattles but was wondering if anyone had run into this and what might cause it- we're think hormonal in balance

So right now DD is down to 1 cockeral to show at fair

our 2 pullets are now laying eggs they were hatched Jan 2012. Cute little brown speckled eggs!

ON to the good stuff, we exchanged the chicks we raised for the ones we paid for, and the wellies are absolute beauties. They are going to be a challenge as they are not hand reared at all, so they need to be handled a bunch.

I hope that it's not too late to gain trust with them. Probably is.

glad to hear they exchanged for the birds you wanted and paid for!! You can earn their trust, it just takes time and treats .... lots of tasty treats. If you have someone that sells fishing bait, meal worm are fun to give them. I like to sit down with some in the run and let them come to me. Usually tossing one or two down first lets them know what you have. Eventually someone gets brave enough to come close and get the first treat!

Its been awhile since I have posted. We got our welsummers last fall in preparing for the county 4H fair. Well today all the waiting is over our son took a hen and a rooster to the fair. He received a reserve champion with the hen and a CHAMPion ribon on the rooster !! So proud of him and the rooster. Had to brag a little thanks
