I wish I lived close to you Steve and SCG. I love to candle eggs. I just use my little coleman max light flashlight and my hand. I can see veins early even before day 7. Day 7 to 14 I can see lots of cool things and veins. Seeing movement it amazing. You really have to get an eye for it. I put the light in the palm of my left hand and make a circle with my fingers around the end of the light and then hold the egg up with my right hand and make a seal between my left hand and the egg on the aircell end. Then I turn and move the egg with my right hand till I can see good. I do this in the dark in the bathroom with the door closed so there is no outside light messing with my eyes. Let me know if you need a picture of how I hold the light to the egg. I could do that for you.

I made one using a mini LED maglight and the roll from black electrical tape. I slipped the cardboard piece from the roll of tape over the end of the maglight and used what was left of the tape to get a good seal on the end of the light. Works as well as the Cool-Lite I just bought. You just need to get a bit of space from the lens on the light with something that can make a seal on the egg.

I go into a room that is so dark I can't see my hands without the flashlight.

Sometimes it takes that to get your eyes used to what you are seeing.

Ok this is a light green egg from my fridge.

This is how I hold the flashlight in my hand. I cover the whole tip of it with my hand.

Always put the big end (aircell side) towards the light.

Hope that helps. When things are growing in there you can always see the veins the best right along the edge of the aircell.

Sorry for your loss....just wanted to add that still air should be at 101.5 not 99.5. That would be for a forced air incubator. Also, please throw away the thermometer that came with your incubator if that's what you are using for temps. A little digital (accucheck I believe) is very cheap and MUCH BETTER than the trashy ones that come with the bator.

Dark room! It takes my (admittedly bad) eyes a few minutes to adjust, but then it is much easier. Hope that helps!
