Well - I got nothin' - Of twelve shipped eggs with bad air cells they all just gradually quit. They were due to hatch Thursday and I'll leave them in for a while but I'm pretty sure they're done for.

I'm going to keep the web site for hatching bad eggs so if it happens again I'll know better what to do.

Good luck you guys!

That's probably a good idea to wait but you have way more patience than I have.

I've also had a bit too much adult beverages this night and won't be trusting myself enough to try candlin' this fine eve'nin

I believe I've always shown my light through the side of the egg . I can clearly see those veins , it might be my technique rather than poor eyesight .

No one killed your birds .... a predator got in so start looking for a small hole.

Thanks for the input but believe me we've certainly searched high and low....it's not our first rodeo on raising chickens (just incubating them

). We've had chickens on and off on this property for over 30 years. We've lost some to predetors over those years, just never have seen anything like this. I'm not saying it wasn't a predator but there is no breach in the fencing, prints, only a couple drops of blood for 18 dead birds, all accounted for. And an empty trap....and we all know that the one thing that is a constant is that predators return. Yet this one hasn't even so much as touched the trail of bait to the trap in over a week.

But I hope you're right!

While I've not known them to pile their kills , minks often eat only the heads and can enter very small openings , like the size a rat would go though or smaller . I've heard chicken necks , heads , or sardines work as bait . It would take a pretty livetrap to hold one .

I think the problem may be that my glasses are around 10 years old

They're number 154 on my list of things to buy when I have extra $ . So far I've never gotten that far down the list . I squeaked by on my last eye test for the driver's exam , so .................................. LOL
