I would like to start this thread as a place for people to come and post their opinions, experiences, and other information about worming chickens.

Please share any info/stories. Here is mine:

I have been doing some research myself and I have found it to be an extremely confusing topic. I have 9 backyard pullets (and 4 roos... soon to be fewer) just for fresh eggs and nothing else. My goal is to raise them organically and free-range them whenever possible. However, I recently lost a pullet and in researching the situation, I think it's possible (but not definite) that she had gapeworm. Since then, I've been trying to learn about what I need to do, if anything, for the rest of my flock.

Many sources say that only if you have a worm infestation, you should treat. Other sources say you should always treat regularly. The ones that say you should treat regularly have recomendations anywhere from once per year, every six months, every 3-4 months, every month, or continually. That is very confusing to me. Also, when you do treat, most places say that you shouldn't eat the eggs from your chickens afterward. Some say for one week, some say for two weeks, some say for a month. Not only is that confusing, but it would kill me to throw away all those eggs! And if you treat regularly like some suggestions, you'd end up throwing away as many as half of your eggs from your chickens all the time! That's horrible!

Also, different sources make different claims about which medications kill which worms and also different dosage recommendations.

So, I am officially totally confused. I want to keep my chickens healthy. I want to eat the eggs from my chickens. I want to minimize the chemicals I give to my chickens (they've had none so far). But, I can't tell what's right at all. I know responses to this thread will vary greatly, but I am hoping to at least open a good dialog on the topic so that as much information as there is can be available in one place.

Thank you in advance for your responses!

good thread! I cant decide what to do either! I have the Wazine..just not sure if i should use it, and if i'll need to use other wormers also..

There is quite a bit of great information on deworming already in the forums; just do a search. You should come up with lots and lots of helpful info from the wonderful, experienced people on here. Good luck!

I'm considering worming with Ivermectin. The pour on kind for cattle. It's my understanding that it not only takes care of internal worms of all kinds it also protects against external parasites at the same time.

Is there a period of time that the eggs shouldn't be consumed and is it really that good on controlling so many things. I've read that 5 drops on the skin should be sufficient for a heavy breed bird. Any feedback would be very helpful.

I am endlessly confused about this topic but I am starting to get a better feeling about it. I was so worried about the varieties of poo that I was seeing from my 20 or so birds that I finally sampled 4 or 5 suspicious looking piles one morning and had my vet look at it under a microscope. I use DE and some natural stuff that I add to the feed that is a preventative, but I have some wazine and some wormozole on hand just in case. I am also ordering some Ivermectin to have on hand.
Anyway, the vet saw nothing as far as parasites, and I went on my way happy.
But then a couple of days later one of my hens dumped a morning poo that was full of what looked like round worms. I googled them and am sure thats what it was. So I treated with wazine and stayed away from the the eggs for 2 wks...and in any case you can scramble them and feed them back to the chickens, and you can hatch them if you have a roo handy!
Well, I havent seen anything like a worm since but I was seeing some orangey strands that I wasnt sure about...blood? I didnt know.
but luckily I found a poo page which I have posted on my meetup page here: http://www.meetup.com/Chickens1/messages/boards/thread/7466886 and according to the photos there, my chicken poo is well within the range of what is normal. I was about to worm with a wider wormer but I cant see any reason to. What I was worried about is a natural shedding of a bit of intestinal lining...its a great way to see whats normal and whats not!

I was about to start taking pics myself, but this woman did the legwork, and I feel so much better about the varieties of poo Im seeing!
I dont know if I will worm regularly in the future but now I know what to look for.

I just read on here that the orange strands are the start of coccidiocis. The girl thought it was worms and it wasnt. She had to treat with Corrid. It a post or two above this one.

thanks to everyone for the replies so far! Keep them coming!

references to other threads on the topic are fine... but I am really looking to create a thread here with as much information in one place as possible. I am aware that there is lots of worming information out there that is spread around. That is particularly why it is confusing. Probably most of us who are checking this thread are hoping to find ONE resource because we've already checked around and done searches and just become more confused not less. Please, if you have info to share, please post it in this thread rather than just saying "there's info out there already."

I look forward to the good info to come! Hopefully ThreeHorses will post here as I just read a great post with specific information from ThreeHorses that seemed to have some good stuff in it!
