The worst parent in the world.

My parents thought me at an early age that pets come and go. You did NOTHING wrong! Don't feel bad about it. Your child loved that dog and he'll love the next. And i'm sure the dogs new owners love their new dog too.

Edited to add:
Missusduray is completely right. Take your kids to find a new dog. A puppy would be best so that they can create an early bond with the new pup and to train the dog to stay at your house and not to run off.

Once again don't beat yourself up over this.

Well my son hasnt touched a bite of food still and he got so dehydrated I had to take him to the ER and get a bag of IV fluids in him. (NOT KIDDING). HE has literally made himself sick. I never would have thought it would have hurt him this much. I wont go ask the people for the dog back. I cant do that to people. And I dont want to run out and get the first puppy I see. We have a few breed we like, German shep., collies, corgis, black mouth curs. We really want a black mouth cur pup but their is only one breeder here that we know of and they arent planning on having anymore litters. I dont know what to do for him. And never seen a kid get so heart broken like this. Sure animals come and go, but to him it is like loosing a member of the family. And in his little mind his dog was stollen, and I havent been able to change his mind about that. He just wants to lay in his bed and cry. I am totally shocked about it...

Im so sorry for your son. You aren't a bad parent. You are a good dog parent. You did what you thought was best for the dog and your family. It will all work out in the long run.

I found a female Black mouth Cur on a rescue site. Woman's name is Belle Igerent and phone # is 334-826-6890. Beautiful dog. I don't think I ever saw one before.

nuchickmama How old was this dog? Did they have an email adress? We dropped our long distance service here recently, we really never make long distance phone calls. Now I kind of miss it. Any way do you the web adress or an idea of where this dog is? Any info. would be great. Anyway Ethan finally drank alittle bit today, I gave him a popsicle so he is getting some fluids. He is still big time depressed still. And he still wont eat anything. Like I said I never seen a kid get so hurt like this. He is very sensitive, i just didnt know it would ever go this far. I really am worried that he will make up his mind to run off and try to get the dog back, he keeps saying he is going to do that.... And it is a good 2 1/2 miles away. So that is a scary thought. Thank you all for your support and help, I really do apperciate it.

Hi Alleyoops,
Just spoke with the owner. The dog is approximately 1 year old and weighs about 65 lbs. She sleeps every night with them. They are located in Auburn, Alabama. Her email address is [email protected]. Her name is Mary Bryant and I just spoke to her. She did however say that the dog is very sweet but does not like cats or small animals. Hope this helps. I'll keep looking.

I think keeping an open mind is good and thinking of all of the "what ifs" might help. If you did choose to ask for the dog back I bet the people would be understanding. They can handle the emotions better, as adults, of giving up the dog. There is still the issue of the dog running off. Is he neutered? If there is a way to get the same dog back and make it work that would be great for your son. If not, I vote for the new puppy as well.

I guess my DH went and talked to the people about getting the dog back. And they wont give him up, They are attached. And this is to be expected. I wasnt planning on asking them, because I am not the type who can give someone something and then turn around and then tell them that I am taking it back. I didnt know that he was going over there. But he and his best friend went, I gues his friend also knows these people personally, and they lost their dog about 8 months ago. I am kind of glad that he didnt press them about it, even though my son has made himself sick over it. I imagine that they have gotten attached to him and it would have been wrong to take the dog back. My son has finally decided to eat a little bit this morning, not a lot but some. He still doesnt want to do anything but sit in his room. My DH has kicked him out side and made him ride in his friends Backhoe which I think helped him a lot. Any I keep you posted. And I have looked on pet finder and I havent found any thing fairly close. My Uncle lives in Simmes Port, LA and those types of dogs run thick there, I am hoping he can get his hands on a pup and bring it up when he comes up here in july. But in the mean time keep your eyes peeled for me thanks.
