The Wyandotte Thread

Nothing more beautiful then flock of Columbians in the grass, they still take my breath away.
Wish I could get some new blood though, good quality birds seem to be pretty much nonexistent in Ontario.

Yes, there are only a handful of breeders with Columbian listed in the American Wyandotte Breeder directory.

They are such a lovely bird in temperament, make great mothers, are nice egg layers and a nice meat bird. It is a shame there aren't more people with them.

I've had my flock now for six years having purchased the flock from a breeder who had them at least that long. He had purchased his birds from a gentleman who was retiring after 20 years of breeding them. The flock has had no new blood added.

I'm going to try a test breeding with a White line to see how that will affect the comb on my cocks.

Pretty funny,
I haven't been on the Forum for a while and may have to change my signature to reflect the fact that the perfect Wyandote for me at this point is a great production bird as close to SOP as possible under the circumstances. ;)
I am interested in hearing from y'all who have been working with Wyandottes for a few years what kind of utility expectations you have for y'all's respective flocks.

Twelve hens provide anywhere from 6 to 11 eggs a day...each hen giving 4 to 6 eggs a week.
Hens run 6 to 6.5 pounds and cocks about 7 to 9 pounds at maturity.
Pullets born in early spring may begin laying in the fall. Later pullets will begin laying in the spring.
Fertility reduces when outside temps reach 90 degrees in summer.
Wyandotte are winter egg layers and numbers are reduced to 3 to 5 eggs a week.
Hens will go broody at least once a season sometimes twice.

In my flock the pullets start laying at 5 - 5.5 month and will lay right thru winter.
I hatch only in spring, so hens 1.5 years will take a break during molt anytime between Oct and Dec and start laying again Jan or Feb.
My Blue Variety seems much more broody about 4 out of 12 will go broody sometime during spring or summer.
Columbian variety 2 in 10 will go broody.
The cockerels finish at 2 KG live weight at 4 month.
They seem to be able to do well in both very cold and very hot climate, but fertility will go down during extreme temperature.
I love their temperament, to me they are the perfect dual purpose bird great on free range, very independent and pleasant to work around.
