The Wyandotte Thread

Posted some photos on the Exhibition thread...thought I'd post a few here. I've been selecting pullet/hens for the 2017 breed pen. Columbian Wyandotte are my favorite breed.

I never breed a single comb bird. They are always culled.

An older hen and two nice pullets.

This girl is molting, but still shows nice type.

To increase size and vigor, I used a White Wyandotte over a select couple of CW hens. This pullet has great type. Bred to a good colored CW rooster, she should throw nice chicks.

Beautiful birds! May I ask your reason for favoring the Columbian Wyan? Everyone has a favorite and I like to hear why.

I would love to give her some fertilized eggs but I'm over my chicken math limit already. Also if she hatches eggs won't that reinforce her broody behavior?

Sounds more like she isn't laying because she is broody. Wyandottes are supposed to be a dual purpose breed, which means they are decent at laying and decent meat birds ... but do NOT excel at either.

She is always going in and out of broodiness. Drives my crazy. I threatened her with the soup pot but she just thumbed her nose at me.

Quote: Like all Wyandotte, the Columbian make a great winter layer and meat bird. The hens are good brooders and make excellent mothers. The roosters are gentle but fiercely defend their girls from predation. I also have Black, Blue, White and Barred Wyandotte (from the White over Columbian).
While the color variety takes a lot of attention, the Columbian has few breeders and the color is becoming harder to find. There are only 7 breeders for the Columbian color variety listed as members of the Wyandotte Breeders of America.
As a Heritage breed, I want to keep my line going. I am the third breeder for this strain..it has passed from one breeder to another and then to me. The genetics make a healthy, vigorous bird, food and forage responsive, and I like the Columbian pattern.

Hello guys! I currently have 3 Golden Laced Wyandotte hens, 5 Silver Laced Wyandotte hens, and 3 Silver laced wyandotte roosters. I am trying to get rid of 2 of the Silver Laced Roosters, if anyone is interested. But I am joining the thread to be with wyandotte lovers mainly! Here are some pictures of the roosters I would like to sell:
