The Wyandotte Thread

Both blue laced red. They are different shades because the blue gene carries blue black and splash. The pullet carries the splash and the rooster carries blue. Im not positive but i think blue laced red and splash laced red will have only blue laced red and splash laced red and no black laced red i think but im not possitive.

The splash pullet looks okay as far as lacing and color, still a bit young and may need another molt, but I am not seeing much color in her hackles. The gold-laced cockerel looks fine, color and lacing-wise, but he has a single comb (a simple autosomal recessive trait) instead of the required rose comb, so I would caponize him and look for another. Oh, if he's supposed to be a black phase blue laced red ... you have the gold gene showing through as brassiness or orange-ish color.

What is normal for wyandotte eggs size wise? 1/2 our eggs just jumped from 2" long and 5" around to 2.5" long and 5.5" around... a very large difference. They were a medium sized egg, now it looks like super jumbo. Is that normal or are we getting unusually large eggs? They have been laying for 3.5 weeks give or take.

Standard bred Wyandottes lay medium size "tinted" eggs ( pale beige) never jumbo size.
If yours lay jumbo eggs, they are probably hatchery birds bred for laying, rather then the true heritage dual purpose Wyandottes that are fair to good but not outstanding layers.

thanks a lot,
I brought a few more wyadottes, I belive I got two boys and a girl.
they are around 2 month now, would like to know what you think.

I have 3 silver laced and one of them does not have a rose comb but she looks just like the others.perhaps a mutt but her coloring and everything else is typical.this is Opal. I'm not sure if you can see in this photo that her comb is tall and flopped over.

The single comb is recessive to the rose comb, and has basically been lurking and popping up for over a century. I personally do not hatch from single-combed Wyandottes, as their offspring will all definitely be carrying a copy of the SC gene.

Agreed.
