The Wyandotte Thread

I spoke with gabberts about their Buff Orpingtons. Was told they had a mixture of hatchery and exhibition in their breeding pens. My guess is they are about the same on the Wyandottes. Call and ask them. They were honest with me.

The pictures of their SLWs that I've seen on ebay honestly look like nothing more than hatchery stock. Ok if you want eggs, not ok if you want a bird that looks like that standard says they should.

As far as them being honest I have my own experience with them on that.

I looked at my petchicken and the pic they have for SLW is the very same one that Gabbard Farms has their name on and posted with their ebay ad.
Now who's pic is it MPC or theirs? there is one other ad on there that has Myers SLW pic on it. Now I know why I have shyed away from eggs on ebay.
I just want a few to project with and I have someone wanting some chicks this spring. I know on the Marans to stay away from them (Gabbards) as I have seen it posted that people where not happy. Oh well if ya'll know of anyone that has a few eggs they a would be willing to sell or chicks please let me know.

Gabbard Farms and MPC both do the same thing to lure in customers - Convince them they have excellent stock. MPC simply uses professional photographs of someone else exhibition quality birds, and Gabbard Farms sets up their advertising and website as if they're a genuine reputable breeder. They're both average hatchery stock.

Speaking of hatchery quality, my own Silver Laced Wyandottes are starting to play mind tricks on me. . . Everyone's now finally beginning to molt, but one in particular is molting at the chest in such a way that her lacing looks real, like a show-qaulity bird. . . But in reality, all I'm seeing is that the almost entirely white feathers are spaced far apart, and the dark colored down underneath is providing for what looks like lacing around each feather. She looks more beautiful in molt than in her full plumage.

Oh, how much this thread helps!

I just began my first Market Poultry project and the breed assigned were Silver-laced Wyandottes. At this stage, the chicks are about 3 weeks out. They're incredibly large. I'm quite surprised at how flighty the chicks are. They're handled daily and still very skiddish... Is this a breed trait? Or will they outgrow this stage?

I'll be sure to post plenty of pictures, I plan on winning grand champion market birds again, and this thread seems to be a realiable reference.

It often depends on where you get your birds. I've heard a lot of people complain about their hatchery SLW being skittish or mean. Mine aren't hatchery birds and are very laid back and friendly birds. Part of it is also probably their age......I think all chicks go thru what I think of as "their spazzy phase" when they seem to be more easily startled.

Hi - this is my first post to this thread. I got SLW about five years back and thought they were great until I did more research - ooh boy! Hatchery all the way, but nice girls. I now have a splash BLR pullet, and I was wondering if I could get an opinion before I embarrass myself at a show again. She is about 4 months old here. These are the only ones I could get her to stand still for, but I will try for more if needed. Thanks! - Mary in NJ
