The Wyandotte Thread

This is my daughter's Golden Laced pullet. She is roughly 6 months old, and is from Duane Urch. She did go to a small show a little younger and got happy comments. This is our first Wyandotte (no one else has any in this area) and I welcome comments on her, as my daughter and I have a lot to learn. To my eye, she's developing nicely and feels very Wyandotte. They're flash pictures, so the color isn't quite true.

I think he wil be at Columbus and will deliver birds....he has great stock.

here is a great example of what a wyandotte is supposed to look like, big head, great type, and lacing. I can assure you she did not look like this at 6 months old.

here is another bird we raised....black wyandotte cockerel

I will have to get out in the rain today and take pictures of our new 2010 BLRWs growing out....the heads are bigger this year and they still have great type.

Here is a 2010 bantam Columbian Wyandotte pullet we raised that has a great wyandotte tail......

We showed her at the Central Indiana show

Best Variety and Reserve Breed out of a class of 174 Wyandotte Bantams...judging was the ABA president, Jeff Halbach

notice the teepee shape on the back of her tail......her head could be a little wider, but she has great type and perfect wing color. Every bird can be improved in some way.

So, comparing pictures, reading between the lines, I'm feeling our GLW pullet head is small and her back is long, but that those may improve with time. Did I catch that correctly?

From behind the teepee shape (very evocative description, thanks) is there.

you have a nice GLW.....you should be proud. You can get a rooster and raise as many chicks as you can and cull like crazy.

I love that picture of Turbo’s Black cockerel. He is a fine bird! However for the sole purpose of learning, the silver laced is ok but suffers in the tail area. Right where the sweep of back and cushion meets the tail coverts there is a pinched area or indention that would make it easy for a judge to skip over that bird and move onto others in the class. We too struggle in this area with some of my silvers but it is an area we are working on. I think it is a direct result of too much fluff. That bird does have an awesome head. Notice the tail on the following bird. It has more of a straight shot though the tail area.

That bantam Columbian’s tail is exactly what many of us are banging our heads over. See how the tail feathers are curling in towards each other. That is incorrect. The “Teepee” door is shut. In the following picture this white (young and not in show condition and tail feathers too soft) better demonstrates a broad and open tail set.

Poltroon your golden laced is actually really nice. I would not say that she is too long in the back but rather that she needs a little more tail rise. That could however just be the picture. I would watch the shafting on the breast feathers though.

Colby318 Great questions. Our golden laced are originally from our blrs lines. We did cross black laced blrs into a white and then we kept breeding back to the golden’s culling for size and type. It was a mess at first with all sorts of colored chicks including chicks half laced and half barred but now we have large bodied golden laced. By description there is no difference between a black laced blr and a golden laced. I personally think that the black laced blrs are too red too be considered golden laced and that is why we toned it down a little.

The elusive search for that next great bird is probably the biggest contributor to the enjoyment of this hobby. If all these birds popped out perfect what fun would that be? Hmmm.. Actually no judges would be needed at a show. hmmmmmm

Well, everyone has their opinions..... we raised all of these birds our self and didn't have to buy them and have won BV, BB, and even Champion American/ reserve Large fowl with our silver laced. Won RB with our Columbian bantam and RB with our black rooster so i am confident they are top notch birds...... now Jesse, we have bad blood between us and have our disagreements but i would appreciate if you would email us privately and stop trying to cause problems on the forum

There is no such thing as a perfect bird out there...but it really is hard to judge birds faults based on pictures, you need to have that bird in your hands and look it over to as the poultry judges do at the shows. Comb faults, color faults, toe-feet problems, size, etc.

I think your pair of SLW look like very nice birds, I hope you are still planning on showing some of your LF Wyandottes at Columbus, Oh this year and I look forward to seeing your birds. I plan on entering some SLW, BLRW, and Blacks, I believe Duane Urch is judging them and I am interested to see what an old wyandotte breeder likes at the show.

I know you like your large fowl just I like I do, bantams will always be runner ups to the big birds.
