The Wyandotte Thread

Pah! I've been looking for good GL for a year now. I'm going to call Stromberg's hatchery next week and order some of the breeder's chicks. They're from Duane Urch. I think there is a 10 chick max so I will probably order some of his black wyandottes and 5 EEs from the hatchery stock. In the meantime, I buy all the "black" blr wyandottes the Turbos (aka www.foleyswaterfowl.com) will sell me. I know they're not really gl and would never sell them as such, but the type is spectacular.

Look what I ran across today......not sure the quality because there are no pictures, but he does show birds and I think he will be at Columbus.

Hi Wyandotte Experts,

I need a wyandotte critique! I've never raised wyandottes before, but this spring I hatched some silver laced and some BLRW from a breeder who is supposedly pretty good, though now I can't remember her name for the life of me. Anyhow, I got a male and a couple females of each variety. Here are a few photos of the girls... don't have pics of the boys yet. I was wondering:

1) Are these "show quality?" Would they have a chance of winning anything?
2) What are their faults? I see that they have some feathers with pointy lacing instead of rounded... that's a fault I think? What about the blrw's... I think I heard somewhere that darker, richer red and blue are preferable, whereas mine are very light colored. Is that true?
3) What are their good points?

Thanks!

Anne - The two blue laced birds you're showing are actually splash laced, that's why they appear so light.

Otherwise I see one blue laced red in the background who seems pretty good, actually.

Otherwise, as for show quality - I LOVE the lacing, especially on the silver girls, but if you want to show them and win, they'll need a shorter back and less upright looking tail. They need to look very round and sort of squat, really. So, I believe they need more work on their tails.

I think your best looking Wyandotte is the Blue Laced Red in the background of the Silver Laced photo.

Thank you for the critique Illia! I never would have guessed! I will try to get a full pic of her... I didn't even photograph her before because her lacing looked messed up to me. Shows how little I know!!!

Do you have a more front angle of the silver laced?

I'd take my last comment back and maybe shoot for the Silver Laced if I were you, but mainly all I'm seeing is her butt so far. You're looking for a nice short back with a well defined "cushion" at the rear and a 45 degree tail angle, but not a tail that protrudes up from the cusion. Instead it should be very short and sort of give the rump a rounded off look.

The blue laced red has a better body, but she's missing the nice cusion and short back, or so it seems.

I did get one front pic of one of the SLW hens, but not a very good one (and I think this was the hen with the worst lacing in front, the others have more rounded lacing in front I think). But here it is:

they are still young....the tail is the last thing to grow out. Wyandottes take 18 months to fully mature so give them time...... they look pretty good to me so far and your SLW has a great head.

They are indeed young, but I honestly don't see what is so bad about her lacing.

Now, her head I'm personally not a fan of, but perhaps quite a few others would disagree. She's young anyway.

My only last note on the Silver Laced is her rump feathers need a little more volume towards the rear, but, again, she's young.

Got any other photos of the Blue Laced Red?

BLRW are not recognized so you can not have SQ but you have some of the best quality i've seen
