The Wyandotte Thread

Golds are not the same as blacks. Blacks carry a gene that covers up other colors. Gold is basically the base color of all BB Red, Golden Laced/Penciled varieties, etc. I would say that most Blacks "carry" gold, but they are not the same. I'm also not talking about only Golden Laced, which we sometimes refer to as Goldens, mostly b/c it's the only variety of Wyandottes with Gold in its name. GLWs are golden, but they are not the only variety of chicken that is

Is that as clear as mud?

It was good to see you...I was tired from all the work Rebecca was making me do. The book is called Standard Wyandottes , it was written a long time ago, but alot of the breeding tips for the colors in wyandottes are still true. No
problem on the heads up about leg color..Black Wyandottes may appear to be simple to breed but....undercolor, leg color, the green sheen, and gypsy face can all become problems very quickly if you dont keep an eye on it. Especially white under color on the males....judges look for that fault at the shows.

Is white under color in black laced red males a fault as well?

So when you breed a BLW x BLW and get "blacks" in the mix, they are not golds. They look alike(but what do I know)...how can you tell the differences?

A black laced red would look just like a darker red GLW, so I would follow the APA standard on GLW. My standard is at work...

Is the white under color in the hackles only, or all over.
