The Wyandotte Thread

Yep that's how my hen is to. Dark with little definition. Please do post a pic!

I'll try and get one of my girl too.

I have seen some incredibly georgeous birds on this thread. I got my chicks from a hatchery...are my girls going to have the beautiful lacing that these birds had. I got silver laced....or since they are hatchery chicks, will they be a "watered down" version and not have the awesome lacing?

I think it's the luck of the draw. I have two hatchery girls. One has pretty good lacing, the other has a thin, white stripe down most of her feathers. I got some from a breeder and at eight weeks they have MUCH nicer lacing than the girls. I LOVE my two girls, though. They were my first chickens...

I have to say that I got my first 3 baby chicks less than a week ago and I'm in love. They are all three BLRW and they are so sweet. They are content perched on my hand for a few minutes at a time. I'm loving their little personalities that are starting to shine through. I had posted pics in the pic section, but thought I'd post them in the official Wyandotte thread.

I think I'm going to be upset at myself for ordering any other breed. Should have just gone with all Wyandottes. And next time I'm ordering from a breeder. I'm so glad there are a few to chose from on this site alone!

They are from the local chicken farmer, so hatchery, I'm assuming.

I'm raising some BLRW from hatching eggs I bought from 2 different sellers. Disappointed at how many turned out to be the black, or gold laced, variety. I have a friend who has a bunch of 3 month old gold laced pullets she wants to sell. The parents are from Ideal Hatchery--anybody know anything about the Wyandottes from that hatchery? I have read that the gold laced from the blue laced reds are genetically basically the same as the gold laced. Anybody see any issues if I got some of her birds and mixed them in with my BLRW gold laced? I'd like to keep the nice blue laced reds separate. Also, while I'm asking questions about this, I'm new with Wyandottes--some of the hatching eggs came from a seller who claimed they would be "all blues", from a black roo and splash hens. Well, NOT! I am very disappointed with how many black (gold) laced I got from that hatch. Assuming the seller to be honest, could someone explain this result to me? Thanks, I hope to learn more about how the Wyandotte genetics work. Oh, and one more question: how old before you can tell for sure whether the BLRW is a blue or a splash? I have read it is sometimes hard to tell them apart.

I know some of the more knowledgeable people will help answer but for now, a hatchery bird is a hatchery bird. You won't get show quality birds that is for sure. As for the GL being the same genetically as the Black variety of the BLR, I was told its not. They are genetically different. Again the more knowledgable Wyandotte gurus will help answer better than I can.

I know how you feel about disappointments. I have tried to hatch BLR off an on this year and haven't had a single one hatch. That is the chance one takes with shipped eggs, at least they were fertile. Luckily I have a fellow that lives 45 minutes away from me that will let me buy some Silver Laced eggs from him, hopefully I will have more luck with those.

Edited to fix aweful grammar.

they must have been breeding a blue hen to a black laced rooster.
another topic.... the black phase BLRWs are not the same as the Gold Laced Wyandottes. Breeders have been selling them as GLWs and in turn they have been crossed on the GLWs. The cross had really taken the GLWs down a notch....not the same color, not the same bird, not a good cross, and the BLRWs have too much shafting on their feathers.

Blue comes in a wide variety of colors, from such a light blue that it may be confused with splash, to so dark a blue that you may think it is black. So you might have very dark blue BLRW and just think they are black. The only way to tell for sure is to breed them.

Black X Splash = 100% blue. This is true. If your birds are black and splash!

And I agree, don't breed the gold laced with the BLRW. It just messes everything up.
